Re: Re: Real SS?

Well the only way to tell if the car is a real SS in 68 is to have a copy of the original build sheet, broadcast sheet, or protecto plate. There is no way to tell by looking at the headlights either. Seems like you are getting information thrown in that is not right. SS taillights are not any different than the ones that came on a standard 6 cyl car. Only the RS came with different taillights and headlights. 350 was the smallest engine availible on a SS car in all the first gen cars. Check the engine to see if the numbers on it match the cars vin...

It was possible to get a column shifter in a SS. Not all cars were floor shift console cars. In fact we have a #'s matching 69 SS 396 375 hp. car that is a column shift auto.

Re: Real SS?

well.....my engine is a 327 so im just gonna see if the numbers match and if they do....well then i guess i got myself a fake ss...lol..o well...i still love the car..it just makes me wonder why someone would go through all the trouble of putting SS emblems on the car and changing the grille.

You can't tell an SS from a non-SS by the headlights or the taillights. However, the taillights will usually tell you if it is a true RS (Rally Sport) or not. If the car has the hidden headlights (the doors that cover the headlights), then this is consider an RS. Bear in mind that you can have a combination RS and SS.

if the taillights include the white back-up lights, then this car is not an RS. RS cars had the back-up lights in the rear lower valance. if the car has hidden headlights, but standard taillights, then there is a good chance that someone converted the headlights to RS.

The SS could have come with either a 350, 396, or 427 engine. The easiest way to verify is to check the stamping on the engine block (I believe it is the one on the right front pad, in 69 they were at the back near the filter). The numbers should match the past part of the VIN of the car (if it is a number matching car).

Also, make sure that the VIN designates this is a V8 car. The first 3 digits of the VIN should be 124 (123 is a 6 cylinder and NOT an SS).

Also, some SS's had a different hood with 2 vents on either side. However, this could have been swapped out since they are available repro.

If you need some assistance in correctly identifying this car, I'd recommend getting ahold of one of the guys in CRG (Camaro Research Group). They specialize in information for 67-69 Camaros. They are a bit anal about their info (right down to the proper bolt), but they are a great source of information. Check out their web site at :
http://www.camaros.org/

P.S. If the price is right...who CARES if it's an SS...it's still a 68 Camaro! 8)
