Smoking in public is a mixed bag. Standing in line to buy tickets or a bus station is no place to smoke since it'll be blowing directly into other people faces. Equally, if there is nobody around who'd be bothered by the smoke then light up by all means.

One last thought is that smoke is a byproduct of a smokers habbit. Piss is a byproduct of a beer drinkers habbit. Most smokers wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of the other guys byproduct.

Re: Smoking in Public

i was at the 4th of july fireworks and some guy started bitchin at me to put my cigarette out cuz he was with his child and not 5 feet from his baby's face he was burning a sparkler with the smoke billowing everywhere. cigarette smoke is part of the every day pollutants you come in contact with, like mack truck exhaust fumes and road blacktopping. just deal with it; we've already been banned from smoking in public enclosed places, i'll be damned if i'm gonna go home now, so i can smoke a cigarette.

Re: Smoking in Public

it's called being conciderate...cigarette smoke bothers people, especially those with allergies, asthma, and (as mentioned before) children and expectant mothers. not to mention that it's annoying and smells real bad. it's not everyday when we'll walk behind a mack truck on the sidewalk or at an amusement park while it's blowing its fumes in our faces

Yes, there are some places a person should not smoke. Bars, clubs, anyplace outdoors, ect. Then, whoever complains is on their own. I quit for 3 years. Unfortunately I started again. There are many places you have to expect it. If you can't handle it. Don't go.

Re: Smoking in Public

im against it in family restaurants and such, where there are gonna be kids or elderly, but i guess it's okay in certain bars, where most everyone that goes there is going to be smoking themselves anyways

well put and agreed. I don't go around condemming smokers about their fatal habit. It is their choice if they want to smoke or not and should not force their habit on others.

Re: Smoking in Public

It's a known fact that second-hand smoke is worse for your health than direct smoke from a cigarette. I think smoking in public is okay as long as it's outside.

Actually that's still being debated. I heard something on it a few weeks ago, but I can't recall exactly what it was about.

Re: Smoking in Public

I don't think people should smoke at all, so obviously I don't think that should do it in public... ciggarettes are more deadly than weed yet weed is outlawed and ciggarettes aren't, weed almost never kills someone directly whereas ciggarettes kill people every day. plus the fact that smoking in public can harm other people with second hand smoke... its all dumb if you ask me

Ummm, isn't it right on the cigarette boxes saying "Surgeon General warning: second-hand smoking is worse than first hand"? I find those little facts to be quite amusing, expecially the part where it says that smoking is harder to quit then cocaine or heroine addiction...but let's not forget that these companies claim that it's not addicting

Re: Smoking in Public

Simple...you have the right to smoke, I have the right NOT to have to breathe it. Smoke outside.

(Courtesy of The Simpsons):

"Please don't smoke in our restaurant. We don't serve contemporary California cuisine in your lungs".

or, at the bar...

"Ummm...I ordered Zima...not empha-SEMA".

I'm looking at my roomates pack of Marlboro's right now and all it says is Surgeon General's Warning: May cause cancer and is dangerous to pregnant women.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Smoking in Public

If it's outside, no problem. If somebody asks you to go elsewhere, do it - it's your problem and shoudn't be theirs too. You have the right to do what you want/need to do, so long as it doesn't impeed the rights of others to not be bothered by it (seems to be good logic for many things)

Re: Smoking in Public

My current pack says:
Smoking when pregnant harms your baby.
Government Health Warning.

Well, I guess I'm OK on that one

Re: Smoking in Public

I think its a courtesy issue. Being a smoker myself, if I'm out in public like at the mall or the movies, I try to keep distance from the crowded areas. I don't like it when somebody goes out of their way to start trouble over it though. That gets my fuse burning pretty quick...
