SR20DET Legal?

Obviously we are talking about the jdm sr20det engine....it is illegal. If you want to waste your time putting in a 200sx motor(which isn't worth it) go ahead. However the jdm sr20 is still different from the usdm...especially the harness and plugs.

For the last time there is no engine in your USDM 200sx that is anything close to the silvia or 180sx despite how much wishful thinking by tons of n00bs is being done. It's more than transmission differences, I'd say the KA24DE is closer to a silvia SR20DET than a 200sx SR20DE is.

There are shops (all it takes to be a 'shop' is a business license and a $300/month bay ) claiming they can do SR20DET swaps legally because of this.

Also despite smog checks, any JDM engine for a 240sx is illegal no matter what state you are in...despite what friends say. Chances are you will never ever get caught, but should a prick of a cop stop you and flag your car you will be harshly fined/impounded. They are starting to do this in my area...they want to cite any 'peeling out' as street racing as well...

I'm so lucky to live in europe eh you guys must be so mad at us for us having the sr20det (although stock isn't as powerful as the japanese one)

It's not legal because it never was found in a car in America. You cannot put any engine into a car newer than it and you cannot put any engine into a car if the engine was never in a production vehicle in america.

Also any emission equipment on both the 'chassis' and that particular year of engine must be intact.

It has nothing to do with whether a car will pass smog or not if it's ok to use an engine.

Thats the only problem i see...i dont think a cop will pull you over and notice you have a jdm engine under your hood, whether he checks it or not.

Guys, you only have to worry if you're in California really (I think they're the only ones who do visual) Also, I think that the RB26DETT is legal now, ever since MotoRex started importing, of course you'd have to do the same modifications they do, but they state that they do not detune the motors, but only add all that emissions garbage... If that's true, then there you have it... a fully CARB legal swap for you power hungry boys. Those Skylines must be registered as California cars when they're imported right? Which means the RB engine has to be in the SMOG book to get tested... One of these days I'll call up a referee and bug him about this, if I ever get the # :P

with the same smog equipment that motorex puts in their skylines, yes you can have a fully legal RB26dett even in california

Rumor has it that Motorex is working on legalizing the SR swap right now. It's from a friend who knows the owner...so who knows if it's BS or not.

Yeah there's an old ass thread somewhere here where Morpheus was still the 240sx Moderator, and he talks about how Motorex mentioned that in a magazine article. Keep in mind that was 2001... just keep waiting guys :P
