Re: Time For 2900 mile Road Trip on a GSX (need advice!)

You should be fine with the boost set at any level, because unless you have a heavy foot you won't be seeing constant boost. My advice would be to park at places like Wal-Mart with big parking lots, or regular rest areas. For here at least, nobody is going to walk up to a car in a big parking lot, since they won't think anyone is actually sleeping in their car.

Re: Time For 2900 mile Road Trip on a GSX (need advice!)

ok this is wat happened... last year in october i got a good deal on my 95 eclipse gsx (thought so) from a dealer in florida.. he said everything with the car was fine except the tranny was weak and sunroof wont close properly.. so i thought i could repair it easily.. and bought a flight ticket one way to florida for 88 dollars.. flew there on friday noon... when i went and looked at the car.. i was damm pissed... there were a lot of minor problems with the car which the dealer dint tell me...the speedometer was not working.. i mean i was moving up and down without control for no reason... the doors wont lock.. the radiator light was on etc etc... i argued with him to reduce the price more and finally without any choice i bought the car and started driving it back.. i went there alone.. plus me an international student and this was the first time in US and all i had was high map bought in walmart... worst thing was that the car streo also dint work as well as the cigarette lighter... so i have to drive all the without listening to songs or without a radar... and since the speedometer was not working i dint even know how fast i was going.. cool eh i reached georgia and stayed there in a hotel and next day morning i woke up at 8 and started driving back home... all the way it was fun except i dint hear any noise other than the engine for next 15 hours.. since i bought the food from wendys i dint even have to stop for anything... and i was lucky enough there were to cops either....around 9 at nite i reached oklahoma border and driving towards tulsa when all the shit happened... i knew there was going to be a toll highway and i dint have cash.. i mean i had money in my debit card but not in cash.. and since this was the first time for me in highway i dint know whether they will accept debit and credit card... so i took the exit and started searching for an atm machine... tiredness stuck.. but i was so close to home (wichita kansas) so i thought i could manage all the way.. i was so tired that when i wanted to withdraw cash i press the wrong password and my card got locked...oh shit... i went to walmart and asked them if they could give me cash back with my credit card.. and they rejected it... finally after an hour i found a gas station where they gave me cash and started driving when it started raining heavily... and when i took a turn into the tool highway.. i hit the curb and blew my front passenger tire and me so stupid and tired that i dint even realise that my car was puntured.... and i was driving at over 60 i guess in the heavy rain and i the car was still stable (i dunno how but may be awd) after around 1-2 miles only i realised i blew my tire.. so i parked in the corner of the highway.. it was around 11.30 at that time... and heavy rain.. and it had scary mountain on either side of the road no lights in the road except my car light lol... i got out and tried to stop some people to help me but non stopped... then i thought i can swap the spare tire myself and when i was taking it out of the trunk.. i saw some animal like a coyote or wolf i dunno...once again i got scared and went back and sat inside the car... i thought i could sleep inside the whole nite and deal with the tires next morning but since my dorrs wont locked i was worried abt robbers so i made a bold decision... i said fuck the rims and started driving slowly ( less than 10 miles per hour speed) all the way till the pay toll when i reached there it was almost 2 am the ppl working there helped me and the i was back on track... not for long caz the spare tire only last for 50-70 miles so it was getting flat... around 3.30 am i reach tulsa and found a walmart and went in parked my car infront of the car service place and slept... early morning i woke up told them to pump some air in my spare tire and rode all the way back.. i was here in wichita by 11 am in the morning... THE END...i am not trying to scare u... just becarefull and expect all the stuffs... and the best thing have a hand phone.. if i had one i would have had lesser trouble

road trips are fun...I did the same thing last month. I was on vacation in Pheonix Arizona and found a 97 gs-t, went to look at it and loved it for many reasons so I bought it. I live about 45 min west of minneapolis minnesota so it was quite the drive but fun because you are in a tight ass dsm! I had a friend fly down there to ride back with me so it wasnt to bad.

Suggestions for your trip:
1) see if you can get a buddy to go down there with you, makes time go alot faster cause u have someone to talk to + when u get tired they can drive for a bit (takes alot of trust i know).
2) dont pull fast and the furious shit down the interstates the truckers get PISSED!
3) gas milage alot better than you would think, I was suprised (i think it was like 300 mpg maybe more, I just filled up every time i needed a smoke (not smokin in my baby) so it was hard to keep track.
4) keep the speeds down, I told myself that i wasnt going to go more than 10 over..haha its tough with turbo cars u look down and you are doing 100-120. if you do speed look behind rocks and billboard signs those pigs are sneaky.

I think thats it, dont mess with civics trust me you get it alot when you are going cross country. Civcs have been smoked by turbo eclipses many times and for some reason....they think that thier new spark plugs and stickers will help them win.
HAVE A GOOD TRIP AND GOOD LUCK!

Damn thats good When my car was a little less modded I got over 31 mpg on long road trips (12 hours drives to various tracks). 450 miles was my best tank, when I pushed it past emtpy. Lookin at like 150 in gas, lol. My turbo diesel burns that much in 2 weeks.

Take my advice i used to drive up and down the new york thruway going to Oneonta to visit my friends. Keep a window cracked at all times... i fyou dont keep this fresh air comming through you get kind of tired, and air conditioning isnt the same thing. Try and use the radio alot cause if you just listen to road noise youll get nulled to sleep not good. Dont look at those pesky lines on the road you can get mezmorized my them, what i usually do is just look ahead like 2cars and jsut drive the car that way. Also looking ahead 2 cars i never looked down at my speedo maybe you should but i never did and i probably averaged abotu 80.. people really fly on interstates as long as you stay with the flow youll be find. What color is the car if its red dont ever be the person thats doing 80 with everyone behind u... actually just try and follow a group of cars that are moving along at a good pace.

As for sleeping... ive never had to do this cause me and three friends will usually take a long trip together and drive in shifts. But if i were you id just pull over along one of those rest stops... i dont remember what movie it was but it had that guy from half baked in it. Well anyway the rest stop was full of gays making out in the bushes(eww) and than the dude from half baked had a body in this big bag. Well thats were you should stop and talk your chances with the murders and queers. Or just sleep in any well traveled area try and find a really big parking lot with alot of lights and patroling security car. Or if you get ballzy just park in someones driveway.

Oh yeah on long trips your arms get tired so try and rest your arms on your lap and steer using the bottom half of the wheel. This will help to avoid faituge.. and if i were you id also race somepoepl just be smart about it if you see a bridge coming up or anything were you cant get a view of the side of the road SLOW DOWN cops hide eveywhere. If by any chance you speed by a cop pullover and try and sandwich urself in between slow cars in the slow lane making it hard for the cop to get you. If they want to you though your screwed.. tell him your whole story.. afterall they arent always dicks. Never give them ur license until you tell him what you where doing and why you were speeding.

Re: Time For 2900 mile Road Trip on a GSX (need advice!)

park in rest area's and avoid really small store parking lots, parks are not a good idea..

Stores open 24/7 like said before are best.

I parked in a kmart once and slept. Cops showed up at like 2am wandering what i was doing there. Same thing with parks you will get thrown out and fined. Even if they don't have a sign that says closed after dusk most do.

Keep an eye that you don't over heat. Running a long time and sitting in traffic often lead to overheating. It's bad. Specially on a long trip..

Car transports are also cheap todo (well pretty cheap) and it might be cheaper to just fly back then adn have them haul it for you. Plus save you some cash on powerbars ^^

Wow lots of positive tips here, thanks guys. And 95eclipse-gsx, hehe you can probably turn that into a book or something. Yeah you gotta watch out for stuff like that, thanks for sharing the story bro.

EclipseRST, I'll be traveling roughly 2000 miles on I-80, I dunno where that is exactly to I-90 (never looked at a large map, just ran a mapquest on it). But it would be a cool to meet up perhaps, would be a good break for me from the driving.

LacrosseGuy, Yeah I saw that movie too a while back, don't remember much of it except for that part lol. And yeah this car is red lol, I'm gonna be bringing my rader detector with me thats for sure.

Well all thats left now is for me to get back in touch with this guy and get the exact date I'm flying over. Hopefully within a week, I had to delay it last week a bit cause the dude was having finals week. Well I'll be my digi cam with me, and maybe even tape a good race on my way back over.
