Re: 455...What year would be best?
500 and 429 Cads are LIGHTER than big block Chevies, and probably Olds big blocks, too.
Cheap at the junkyard, tons of torque (popular retrofit in motorhomes) but don't like to rev much past about 4200 rpm without aftermarket performance parts. But a fine street engine, I plan to put one in my '64 'Vette. |

The first year for the Cadillac 500 engine was 1970. That was a high-compression engine rated at 400 horsepower and 550 lbs/ft torque. The compression ratio was 10.0:1. The following year ('71), the comp. ratio dropped to 8.5:1 and hp dropped to 365 with 535 lbs/ft torque.
The '70 500 was redlined at 5200 rpm; I'm not sure about the later ones. The '68-'70 472 Cadillac engines (375 hp; 525 lbs/ft torque) are also very powerful, desirable and reliable. But you are probably better off using a 455.

Re: 455...What year would be best?
USE A 1968 455 - BEST 455 EVER! NOT OPINION, BUT FACT!
1970 455'S WERE ALREADY BEING DESTROYED BY EMISSIONS AND LOOKING FOR BETTER FUEL ECONOMY. IF YOU CAN FIND A 1968 TORNADO, YOU ARE SET.... FACTORY NODULAR CRANK, FACTORY WINDAGE TRAY (THE ONLY KNOWN VEHICLE TO HAVE ONE), HIGHEST NICKEL CONTENT IN THE BLOCK CASTING, AND THE EVER FAMOUS "C" HEADS (1970 COMES WITH Ga HEADS). DID YOU KNOW THAT THE 1968 HURST OLDS ENGINE WAS A H.O. 455 FROM A TORNADO? THE BEST OLDS BIG BLOCK EVER IS MY EVER LOVED 1967 400 BIG BLOCK! 1967 442's CAME WITH THE 4" BORE AND 3.98" STROKE, WITCH MAKES THE ENGINE WHAT THEY CALL SQUARE.... SO I HAVE ALL THE BOTTOM END TORQUE OF THE BIG BLOCKS, WITH THE HARDLY EVER FOUND - HIGH RPMS TO PRODUCE MORE HORSEPOWER. MY STOCK '67 442 W/400 ENGINE WITH M21 4SPEED, AND 3.91 POSI CAN STEP ALL OVER MY STOCK '69 HURST OLDS W/455 ENGINE WITH HURST TURBO 400, AND 3.91 POSI - THE '67 HAS BETTER 60' TIMES, AND BETTER ET's... WITCH MEANS BETTER OF THE LINE AND FASTER DOWN THE TRACK. AREN'T OLDSMOBILE GREAT, AL
