I think it was Drew Hierwater who said it, but there's an old quote in modeling "If it's too difficult, you shouldn't get a trophy." Don't let the rules be so open that you aren't demanding quality or keeping within a theme. If you let in SAS parts, then you have to let in people who just used optional parts in their kits. Net result: there's the chance a box stock Revell Integra could take the win.
Here's a rule list for you. #1: All cars entered must exhibit some form of customized bodywork. Customized bodywork will be defined as any self-made (no kit options or aftermarket parts allowed without extensive modification) modification made with the intention of deviating from a stock or race car replica. #2: Interiors, Chassis, and Engines may also display modification, but may not be the sole realm of modification. Customization = Bodywork. #3: All models entered in final judging must be complete. Primer only if primer is final color. Now, what I feel is necessary is that instead of putting it to a public vote you decide on some judges who we know to be fair and just. The judging panel would judge based on a 50 point system. Each judge would have a total of 50 points they could give to any one model, and the total of all judges decision is the car's final score. Now, let's look at what the cars should be judged on. First off, the difficulty of the modifications made should be a major point. The guy who kit bashed a wing for his 240Z didn't have as much of a challenge as the guy who spliced a 350Z roof onto his 240Z. Thus, more points to the guy who spliced roofs. Secondly, there's the quality of the build. Were the modifications done well or are there still sanding scratches? Is everything square and even? Was the rest of the model given the same attention, time, and craftsmanship? How's the paint finish? And so on. Lastly, there's the aesthetic element. How was the car presented? Were the modifications integrated cleanly to compliment the car or do they stick out like a sore thumb? Was it purely done for shock value? Or does it actually improve the look of the car? Do the colors chosen work with the look of the car? How creative is it? Seen it before widebody kits and been there/done that chops won't get many points here. It seems harsh, but that's the way you run a contest like this for a class like this. The best should win; simple as that. As for the judges, the best people to approach to see if they're willing are the modelers who build well and can be trusted to be both critical and impartial. These guys would sit out the competition and instead follow the build threads to see how the modifications are made and see what's being done. Final judging would take place the weekend after the final day of the build period, and then a thread would be posted in which the judges make known their scores for each model. The totals are taken, added up, and the winner is declared. That's how I'd run it. As for who I'd suggest to judge, well, I'll volunteer. And I think Fly on the Wall, P-man, and Jay would be good choices if they're willing. What do you say, guys?

Re: what contest??
As much as the SAS contest would be good for business, I don't think its such a good idea for a general comp. You want to get as many people interested and enterered as possible right? What good is a comp without any real competition. Personnal prefference would mean i'll be well up for any sort of import action, the drift idea is a particularly good one. However, I think you could turn that around and open it up to everyone by calling it....wait for it!....Motorsport Competition!!! Surely everyone could get into that?
An alternative idea is to have some sort of tuned/customized (not custom) car comp. Perhaps this could be along the lines of a fantasy/real world garage demo or show car. Anything could go here, from a Yashio Factory S15 to a West Coast Gangsta Rap SUV right through to a WRC car in street guise with a fantasy garage stamp on it. As long as there is some sort of concept behind each project then its allowed in. What do you think. BTW, i'd be happy to judge but i may also want to enter

Re: what contest??
Just what we need - another comp
![]() I'm quite anti-competitions. They can be a bit of fun to enter and it is always nice to do well. But building for comps, especially one with very tight criteria goes against the "build for yourself" creed. Add to that the inequity in judging or voting and you have a potential formula for discouragement. Having a specific interest group that sets up a comp as a part of a wider involvement (BMOM Rallycar contest or AF MOTY comp) is great, but having a contest for it's own sake - I dunno ![]() BTW the term “custom” can mean a lot of different things to a whole lot of different people. Same as my pet hate, the usually US-centric “import” tag. Do us a favour - leave it out

rallyraider, not to be mean but your a very discourageing person, you dont seem to like anything. i see alot of other people in this thread that agree with a contest ,so thats that. now unsted of loseing my cool and getting banned im going to ingnore you. chris, i like your idea too, i like how the rules on what can be done are not so tight. i mean i like the idea of a custom car contest but like rallyraider said the term custom car can mean differnt things for differnt people, one person can think a car with a moulded bodykit and flip paint job is custom and another guy can think that a new set of rims is custom. i dont think it whould be fare to define custom as one thing.

Re: what contest??
i wish there was enough people interested to do a Kustom contest, that'd be sweet. By that I mean radically modified 50's-60's cars

Re: what contest??
Even if I wouldn't participate, I vote for Drift! And a public vote! With points to give from 1st to 10th. And that's all. The more spectacular one would win, and that would be fair, because that's what Drift is about, isn't it?
And if a box-stock wins, why not? It's much more difficult to make a great-looking box-stock than to make an ugly heavy-modified... (custom makers, you know I love you!) Just needs, to be fair, that everybody could give the same type of pics: let's say front, side, rear and 3/4 views, white underground for everybody, pic size 640/480. (just an example...) But I seem to be a little out of the subject...

Re: what contest??
pm may be the best choice. More work, but the problem of a poll is that it shows the results...
( 60% for SAS here... )

Re: what contest??
I would say 2, in order to keep motivation, but with 3, I wonder if I could enter with a special 360 spider...
... Let's say 2 months: 3 is 1/4 of a year: it's too much! lol! I'm not sure to be the best advice...

Re: what contest??
Robert I mean to be realistic. Good luck with your competition, however we've seen enough proposed comps bite the dust around here lately to know to proceed with caution. A lot of people can sound enthusiastic about a comp early on, only for life to intervene and have them miss the deadline.
