Question Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

Thanks for the pic.

The noise is NOT coming from the alternator, Distributor, or the wheel hub bearing. The noise source is somwhere below the Engine.

I couldn't get to pin-point the exact location..Its to the right of the circle (in the pic above) and under (?!)

Can you help...

Thanks

Re: Re: Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

It like parts rubbing. I am not sure if its metal. There are others that said it sounded like plastic (metal rubbing a plastic part).

It sounds like pebbles inside a tin can....

Does the car run fine other than the sound or can you feel a difference in performance?

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

The car runs just fine...

Water pump - Does a defect here generate that noise? Should the pump be replaced or is it the bearing?

Thanks again

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

I didn't hear your noise. Just guess from "pebbles inside a tin can", sounds like a bearing issue.

The waterpump and bearing is one piece.

A failed bearing usually sounds like a squeeking noise, not like pebbles in a tin can. Bearings heat up and melt and usually fuse themselves to the casing around them causing a metal to metal sound. Man this is tough, it's difficult not hearing the sound. You say it sounds like it's below the engine? Are you sure it's just not coming from inside the engine itself. The only thing I can think of that kind of sounds like pebbles in a tin can is maybe a valve knocking.

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

might be a little off track.

Can this be a problem with the exhaust? Cat converter......(??)

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

Without listening to the noise, it's very hard to tell what it might be. Could be something loose also.

I have another guess.... it could possibly be either the catalytic converter or the shield. Our van was making the "pebbles in a tin can" noise, and it was pronounced at idle and during acceleration. what our problem was the shield was loose, hope this helps.

Re: Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

Hello again,

The 'pebbles in a tin can' noise turned out to be timing belt tensioner. I replaced all the belts that go with Timing Belt + Water Pump (now poorer by $800).

Also changed the exhuast system (except the Cat converter.)

Thanks again for all the help!

Any advice / suggestions on removing some rust spots?
