Let's not forget the weight advantage the 1.8T has over the VR6.

1.8T vs. VR6

Hello!!!
OK ... There are two types of VR6s because i went to go look at some at my local dealership and there is one that comes with 201 HP and 174HP
sooo... If we're talkin' about the VR6 with 200 HP... It's got to be the VR6 !!!
But if you were to modify a VR6(200 HP), I think the end results would be amazing but it would depend on how much you are willing to spend and how much HP the tuning system you chose, would give you ?
But it is true that the 1.8T is more modification friendly because it's got a turbo so... If you were to change or add some things, we'd see a lot of increases in HP and Torque. But it comes back to saying that it all depends on how much your are willing to spend and how much HP the tuning system you chose, would give you ?

(P.S.:In 2 to 3 months, i'm getting a new VW GTi VR6 with 200 HP and i'll tell you the results because i've got a friend with a 1.8T and he has the same tuning system that i already bought so the results will be accurate !!!)

PEACE !!!

Question:
Which is faster of the line. Turbo or VR6? I heard that because the turbo relies on air from the exhaust to power the turbo, that It gets no power of the line.

Re: 1.8T vs. VR6

The only problem i could see with trying to put a turbo in a VR6 is the room. There is no room for it from what i've seen.

Re: 1.8T vs. VR6

I drive 1.8T and I would prefer a VR6. Drove the new 201hp one at the dealership with a 6spd... Its just an easier car to drive. The torque gives you broad power whenever you need it. Plus Turbo engines definately show a less reliable service record. GTI VR6 R32 shows that VR6 is the superior engine. Its little brothers 337 and 20th anniversary know their place.

Re: 1.8T vs. VR6

actually watched a 1.8T and VR6 run each other several times at a track.

each had intake and exhaust work, they were a '97 and a '98, stock tires and rims (alloy however) both had full interiors, both were manual...you get the idea, equal except for engines. and the VR6 owned all night, in 60 ft times as well as ET.

and turbo charging a VR6 is highly possible, there plenty of room, its just not cheap.

This is a serious consideration. The VR6-powered cars have always felt nose-heavy to me, with slower turn-in response. The 1.8T feels zippier...much more balanced. If you don't mind a little bit of turbo lag, I think the 1.8T is the better choice. The only VR6-powered MkIV that's worth a damn is the R32, which rocks with its cock out.

Hey everybody, I'm about to buy my first car (a gti). It will be used and I'm thinking of spending about $15,000 to $20,000 (canadian) on the car itself and an additional $5,000 to $7,000 on modifications (mostly performance). I've always thought that vr6 was better for power but as I read the posts I'm getting the impression that 1.8T is better for mods. I guess my question would be to you is that with the information I've provided about myself, what do you think would be the better investment? Also, I was seriously looking at an apr turbo upgrade, perhaps up to stage 3.

Any suggestions?

really man, if your not looking for balls out drag racing and are looking for more of an overall excellent drive, go with the 1.8t.

Re: 1.8T vs. VR6

get ($400-500)apr/revo chip you get 240hp/260torque @ fly wheel. With just a chip you walk over any vr6, unless its supercharged or turbocharged. But if you want to run with big dogs like m3/evo/sti, get apt turbo for $2.5k, now you have about 350whp, thats 400hp at flywheel, 1/4 mile is low/mid 12s, depends on the driver.

Hey Ya'll I just bought a 2001 VR6 with 0nly 30,000 miles. I'm stoked. Now I have been reading all these posts and it seems people are pretty true to their convictions. I just want to know what is the best way to pick up a Vr6 without spending half of what the car is worth. maybe throw on a cold air intake and a new muffler? Plus does anyone know the specs on a 2001 12 valve vr6? I know that is has 174Hp but what about torque and 0-60? 1/4 mile?

By the way all you guys should check out hpamotorsports.com who took an R32, threw on slapped on twin turbos and pulled 550BHP/409WHP.
437LB/FT/589LB/FT FLYWHEEL. That'll put you at 3.2 secs! You can see the video too on their website. It's a Ferarri beater. I think we should all bow our heads and say thanks for that!

Re: 1.8T vs. VR6

it wouldn't be that hard to turbo a vr6. Eip has one

http://www.c3cars.com/VW/VR6/index_35.html then you kinda could get the best of both worlds...i guess. personaly if you are gonna be making mad payments or anything but you need the car to be reliable vr6. nothing against the 1.8t still a nice choice. the vr6 is a little bit more bulky and heavy and the lag on the 1.8 isn't that bad cause its not a huge turbo. yea you can put a bigger one on but then you start getting your lag. it's all personal choice. N/A vs Turbo or just a basic reliability

Re: 1.8T vs. VR6

stock vr6 has more power. most ppl are saying well if you chip the 1.8t then the turbo will give you more boost, well what if you supercharge the vr6 then the chip on the 1.8t wouldnt matter. lol
