Re: Premium Gasoline Can i Use it?

I dont use anything but premium in my cars. It seems I get better mileage with prem and also my 84 especially chokes on the lower grade stuff. it runs like crap till I put some prem in it. I think its spoiled . The only way to find out is to try it. If it runs better or you get better mileage , bonus for about a buck more per fill up. If not , dont waste your money .

Re: Premium Gasoline Can i Use it?

Food for thought... the octane rating is not the most important part of the gasoline. These engines typically will run on 87 octane, considering the compression ratio. The important part of the gasoline's performance is the chemical make-up of the formulation. The more gasoline that is in the gas has more to do with it's performance. If the fuel is more chemicals than gasoline, the engine will run poorer. Shopping for gasoline is always wise. One gasoline will preform better than another. Typically, premium fuel is more additives than gasoline, some better than others. Always use the minimum octane necessary for your vehicle, more octane is adding chemicals intended to simply impede the flame front's propagation in the combustion chamber. In English, that means that something unnecessary to the fuel's performance is added to impede pinging. Power adding components may add to the octane necessary, or may not. There are times when premium's additional price is necessary, like when the lower octane's rating is not enough, regardless of where you buy. In this case, it is possible that one of the emission controls is malfunctioning. In that case, fixing the problem is better than spending more for fuel. If you have done things to the engine that calls for better fuel, than fine. If not, find the problem and fix it. In short, guys, gasoline is typically not gasoline anymore; it is chemicals. The higher the octane rating, the higher the chemical content. Ray
