Re: Porsche 959

No there were 20 that were sold to people all over the USA after the 20 they wanted to test crash test the cars. Porsche said no but the first 20 were already in the hands of the new owners and weren’t going to give them back. USA said that they couldn’t be used on the street so most of them were used as track cars only. The man my uncle got his from was the manager of Porsche USA based in Chicago Illinois 5 min away from my uncles European car shop...

Re: Porsche 959

It could joust be a big mess of miss communication but I got that info from my uncle... I found this" Porsche built about 30 'US Spec' Sport 959s for US sale in 1987. The first 8 of them were shipped to Al Holbert's in Pennsylvania, where the EPA and DOT struck down hard and refused to let them in. 7 of the 8 were sent back to Germany with the other 22 to be held for the US owner to come drive in Europe. Most of the owners just put them up for sale in Germany." But that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t keep them for track only. I know this car was before he took it out one day and ran it under a semi truck.

Re: Porsche 959

I have a sports car magazine that isn't but maybe a few months old max and it talks about the FIRST U.S. legal 959 ever. Talking about a place that is finally making them street legal. Until now none have been legal for public road use. Your uncle might have done it but it wasn't legal when it was done.

Re: Porsche 959

okee,
let's say it was a big misunderstandig, but no matter how much 959 have been shipped to US and why and why not, Porsche himself never built an open 959. so it must have been a selfmade or an aftermarket roadster

Re: Porsche 959

No it wasn’t legal, it was a racecar that the guy drove on the street the first time. And went under a semi. Then he sold it to my uncle.

i also have that issue of the legal 959s and its true. i believe it was road and track, if im not mistaken. a few months back, some importer finally got them to pass emissions and all that dot junk. it had new cats mufflers, ecu and turbos which reuslted in more power too. so if you want them street legal, you gotta order them from this one importer only.

Re: Porsche 959

I belive Excellence has a good article about the guy, who ligalized quite many 959s, and they're for sale for about $800,000, I think.

>samurai75007
Could that be a 911, which went under a semi by any chance? And got it restored with some 959 panels?
Looking at the wheels of the red Porsche, the offset seems a bit too deep for the 959. The air intake behind the door sits way too high, and there is a huge space between the door and the rear wheel arch. That's definitely not a real 959.
But, if you are going to make a model, it doesn't matter. You can use Tamiya kit, and make your own 959 cabriolet.

Sorry, but that red one on the picture is not a real 959.
The mirrors are wrong, the air-intakes are not open, the doorhandle is wrong, the wing is not round enough, the seats a.s.o.
Looks like a replica on a 964.

Regards, Bernd.
