I have it too :(
Mine whines louder when turning and accelerating at the same time. It's always worse when it's been cold and idle awhile. I'd check the power steering fluid but I can't friggin' find it. Anyone know a good way to tell me where it would be on my '99 GTP. Other than power steering fluid.. anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Ahh, I found it after more looking. Looks like my PS Fluid was really low. I've topped it off and we'll see if that fixes the problem (although I seem to fear it won't).
Thanks, Brian |

Whining
I have that also, but it's not all that loud. In mine it's the alternator and it seems pretty normal. The vette has it also.

GT will still have some sort of idler and tensioner pulleys. Use a sounding bar (piece of pipe, broom handle, etc) to listen to each pulley. Just put one end on the bracket which the pulley is mounted on (BE CAREFUL NOT TO SLIP AND HIT THE PULLEY) and wrap your hand around the other end with your hand against your ear (like a tube) while the engine is running. You will know which one is the screamer. Don't rule out the alternater and ps pump.
Good luck. |

my whine hits at 2500 rpm's
Whats up.. I own A 2000 Grand Prix G.T. and i have a whineing also, but its kinda differant then all of yours.. when the engine is cold it doesnt whine, but after like 5 minutes of driving everytime the rpm's hit 2500, it makes a whineing sound. at first i thought it was coming from the front of the engine, but i was drivin it around today and it sounds like its coming from the back. Could it possibaly be the exaust? iv brought it to the service department at major world chevrolet (where i bought the car) and they checked under the hood at the trany and didnt fine anything. and i brought it to a service place around where i live and they changed the transmiton fluid and checked it out but it is still whining at 2500 rpm's. i realy need some help and i dont know much about cars. this is my 1st car and im 17 years old... if you know anything about this drop a line, and ill have my mechanic look at it.. thanks a lot... Tom.

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
While you have your serpentine belt off ALWAYS check your idler pulleys. If they feel like they have rough bearings in them, that's the time to replace them.
They can cause the noises your talking about, and replacing them is not all that costly. -slacker

Couldnt the problem be related to the supercharger?

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
Well in my case the Whine is coming from the K&N filter and thrasher cai that I installed. Never the less when the car is idiling and the day is really hot I get the whine out of the PS pump. When my alternator diodes have gone north on my blazer and Z-34 they make a really loud picthed noise that increases with engine rpms and the last and not least usually is the water pump. The older it gets the messier the plastic parts inside gets. So check for noise from the PS pump(flush the PS, refill it and add tranny additive to it), the water pump could heal a little the whine with an additive you can find on AutoZone that that lubricates the pump, the SC will whine(all the eatons whine a little) and if the alternator is whining then get it out and have it fixed vefire it dry out your battery

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?
Hi guys! I have a '97 GTP and it has 81000 KM on it.
Just last week that whining noise got very annoying on my car. I thought it was the alternator at first. Then I took off both of my drive belts and guess what? Both of my belt tensioner idler pulleys were on the way out. Bearings were seriously screwed. Check those frequently to avoid a mess of stringy, melted belts under your hood. Because if those bearings seize, you're stranded!!! I replaced both pulleys and the car is quiet again. One more note on pulley removal. The left pulley(alternator) is left hand thread and the right pulley(supercharger) is right hand(normal) thread. Just so you don't snap the bolt when you remove it!!!! Hope, that helps!! Sure beats replacing an expensive alternator. |
