Tank Slap= is when the handel bars start to vibrate from side to side as the bars start vdrating the 1st response that you as a new rider will wanna do is try to control the motion bye holding the bars tighter well what that does is put that vibration threw the entire bike wich make the vibration even worse now the bars are out of controland are rapidly going side to side and hitting the steering stops once its gets to that point it is almost imposiable to save the bike from going down.

What can cause tank slap is doing a wheelie and having bad or out of balnace tires in the front or warped brake rotors, this is what starts the vibration and you as the rider is what cotinues the vibration and makes it worse.

Tank Slap can occure even under normal rideing and not doing wheelies, it is usaly caused bye rough road or whe you are pusshing it in a turn and you steer into the trun instead of counter steering. when the front tire is light.

I have had some bad ones in my days of ridding and the are scarry I have ben ridding for about 8 years and i have ben road racing semi pro for about 5 years now with WERA & CCS and a little bit of AMA pro Thunder.

I would hilly recomend a ridding school of some sort, you will learn alot about what makes the bike do what it does, and how to counter act it, when you are on a bike you have to be a defensive rider at all times. things happen real fast on 2 wheels.

in a wheelie tank slap it is almost imposiable all you can do is relaxdon't grip the handles bars so hard so that it does not send the vibration threw the entire bike if you can keep a soft grip and let the bars move a bit somtimes and i mean sometimes it will correct itself just rember this is all haping in a mater of seconds, so you will have to think about it before it really happens.

when riding down the raod and you incounter you can let off the throtle this shifts the weight to the front wheel and helps to get in under control pluse don't grip the bars hard let them work there self out if you don't you can just make it worse.

As a matter, on friday morning on my way to work i was playing around with my boss on the intersate we was running about 115 and i decided to pass him, now keep in mind i ride a large bike with lots of power, it is making about 145hp to the rear wheal and about 130flbs of torque, it is V-twin suzuki tl000, so this bike can get away from you very easy, but any bike would have the same response but it mite take it at lower speeds. when i passed in i gave it full throttle in 4th gear the back tire broke loose and then it gripped and the front tire came not more thatn a .5 inch at most now i was going about 140mph up and the bars started to shake vilently, 1st response, and i have ben ridding a long time. Grab tighter well it got worse,well then i realxed let back on the throttle for a split second it transefered the weight to the front and the slap worked it self out THANK GOD and all this happened in less than a 8th mile going 140mph or so. no matter how many times it happens you will never get use to it,

But this is just one of the many things you will encounter ridding a motorcycle, I could go on about the diff things that can and will happen that is why i recomend a good school even if you take a race school then you will get some very fun track time. O and watch for little Ole ladys they are the worse i think the bike scares them itnto running into you.LOL


O and i do not run that fast on the roads very often it is not safe and you are in a uncotroled envirorment, but i was playing with my boss and almost F**K up.
