Castrol, Vavoline, or Penzoil 10w-30 and you should be good.

Any oil will do really, the question is to use regular or synthetic.
However, if you go with regular, I've seen a lot that indicate that Valvoline High-Mileage is about the best there is. Best grade of base stock and a great additive package. Nothing at all wrong with using it in a new engine.

What is the difference between regular and synthetic - and which is better for the Xterra?

Synthetic is better, but costs 2-5 times as much. However, you can run extended oil change intervals (10,000 miles isn't a stretch) and recoup the cost that way.
Synthetic flows better in cold weather and is generally superior to regular oil in every way including lubrication and high-temperature stability. Then again, plenty of engines go 200,000 miles or more with plain oil changed every 3000 miles.

I know its overkill, but I change mine every 5,000 miles with Mobil Full Synthetic and a Mobil "High Efficiency" filter. I'd probaby go longer but it does come out pretty dark at 5,000. I buy the oil by the case from Costco which offsets the cost of the oil change a bit. The main reason for choosing 5000 miles is its real easy to remember, I don't have to write anything down!

I change my Mobil 1 at 5000 too. I have noticed that Mobil 1 is darker than most even when new, which may account for it being so dark at 5000. Either way, it's not like it's expensive, I buy a gallon for $16 every couple of months or so, gasp!

Yep....I've been using Mobil 1----10W-30 for some time now with the changing intervals along the lines of the others here. I have also noticed it being pretty dark at changes, but not overly so.

Seems like, even at the higher price, a good investment (perhaps) in the longevity of an engine I plan on driving for a while.
