4x2 to 4x4
When I bought my X I initially bought it for the purpose of tackling the worst road system in America, New Orleans, I used to drive a lowered volkswagon and it got destroyed so I decided to go with an suv, but at the time I bought it I was buying for practicality, so I went with the 4x2 for gas milage and cost purposes, but now I'm interested in this whole off-road scene, what's the the possiblity of a full 4x2 to 4x4 conversion and where could I score the parts, and who the hell should I get to do it? (I'm a pretty decent gearhead but I once tried to swap a quattro system out of a busted audi TT into my VW bug and it only ended in disaster, and I can only imagine that this type of swap would be similar if not more difficult) thanks

Not trying to discourage you, but in my opinion it would be more cost effective to simply trade your 4x2 in for a used 4x4.

$10,000 minimum to do the swap.
Yup, trade it in and buy a 4X4.

Not to mention a new or used 4x4 Xterra would be under warranty. Nobody will cover you after a swap.
Used Xterras seem to get a pretty good trade in's(albeit 4x4's do much better). |

dude, you are asking for torture. it won't be worth it to convert. what a total pain in the rumpus that would be. now 1 thing you might try is crank up/replace the torsion bars on the frt, add stiffer shocks all around, add rear shacks, add frt bumper/grill guards to make it tougher looking and tougher acting. next, go get some new meats to go along with all the new looks. almost 4x4. i know someone who's got a 2000 4x2 and did those things to his and he could do pretty well off road AND still get the chicks. :silly2:

Not to steal the thunder. Think hard about what kind of 4x4ing you are going to do. Cranking the torsion Bars and dropping $600 on better tires will not give you significant results.
Before you spend any money on Mods on a 2x4 consider a trade in. I would sell privatly and then take advantage of the deals there must be in your area for 2001's.... 4x4ing in an X you will find that you become a more responsive drive on road as well. I value the times (although not as much time as I want) where I have been out there doing technical stuff. C |
