Why LED's on your hood are illegal

The LED's are concidered a federal offense. cars are not allowed to have extra lights other than stock placement light. Cars are also are not to have blue tinted light anywhere other than thead lights. They claim it is impersonating and office. Pretty dumb huh.

Man, I just WISH someone would pull me over saying my washer lights are illegal!! :badass:

But there are a LOT of variables when they try and enforce that little law. For one, you can certainly argue (and rest assured, I've seen it successfully done firsthand) that they are for enhancing your visibility. But I'd probably NOT use that (or any arguement for that matter) if you've got anything other than the white LED's.

Because let's face it, how many people have fog lights?? If the local law enforcement officials want to be "penile enhancements", they can certainly say that THESE are illegal, too! And if that's the case, there's a whole lot of people that should get tickets/fines.

But you're probably asking for it if you have red, blue, or some other funky color facing front, though.

My friend is a cop and he looked into it for me. Good thing they don't know what kind of car he keeps at home.

It varys state to state for the laws. I do know it has to be yellow or orange, but wouldn't the LEDs be the same as the clearence lights on the the top of the cab on a pickup? Are those legal?

It's MY understanding (and this is based on North Dakota state law) that the lights CANNOT be blue or red. White, yellow, and orange are ok. I just went through this s*** with the police and they dismissed my citation based on that. Of course, just like I said before, and just like TRBOBRK said, it varies from state to state.

CAli has really strict laws. blue or red is impersonating a cop..I saw a guy with purple strobs and he got arrested..

If you are worried about what is legal and what isn't, you can read your state laws online. For Illinois, the website is http://www.legis.state.il.us/. It doesn't mention anything about washer lights but does say "Unless otherwise expressly authorized by this Code, all other lighting or combination of lighting on any vehicle shall be prohibited."
