240z engine swaps

Hi
I've been looking into buying an older Nissan for a while, and was looking mainly at a 240sx and swapping in an SR20DET. Being in California, though, smog laws are a huge pain, and I've heard that because of the visual ID part of the inspection I could never get an SR20DET to pass, whethher it was clean or not. I've always been a fan of the 240Z, and since the early years are smog exepmt, I was wondering what RB or SR series motors(if any) swap in without huge amounts of work.

Don t disregard the L series, there's guys making huge power with them.

Bolt on a FI head, some electronics and put the boost to it

I don't have anything against the L Series motors, I would just rather go with a newer factory turbo motor. I assume you mean the fuel injected head from the later 280's, right? Those are still OHV, right? I'm more familiar with DOHC Nissan motors.

They're still OHC engines. If you know about the newer dohc engines, then it'd be like getting back to basics.

Also, the possibilities are endless to what engine you can put in them. If you have't seen Darius's Z, you should take a look. 6 or 7 hunnad HP supercharged LS1. umm yeah.

Oh yeah, I've seen all kinds of motors in Z's. A friend of mine is actually doing a Chevy 350 conversion right now. I was just wondering if say, an RB20DET or an SR20 could be installed without a lot of custom fabricating or cutting. Plus, I'd like to go with a fairly small, light motor. If I can't install one of those motors without breaking my wallet I was thinking about doing a 3.1 liter stroker build. I'd rather go with the RB, though.

Dude, I'm also looking to drop an sr20det into a Z-car and no one is

going to talk me into anything esle; especialy not a 1000lb V8. I don't

want to hurt anyones feelings, but weight distribution is a big deal to

me. If there's anybody out there who's done this swap before, please

chime in. I'm not to worried about the small stuff; I really want to know

about mounting the motor and weather or not there's alot, a little, or

any fabrication involved. There doesn't seem to be anyone with

information on this, so if there's someone who can bring a little

knowledge to the table...

After reading a TON of stuff about both the L and RB-series motors in early Z's (I'm buying a '72 240z in the next day or so) I think I'm going to end up going with an L28et. Besides the price, I like the ease of installation, plus I see now that there is quite a bit of performance to be squeezed from these motors. My question now is waht tranny and reaer end would you guys reccomend? I've read that a good setup is the 5-speed from a '77-'79 280Z with a 3.90 rearend from 280ZX. I'm going to drive this car everyday, with maybe an occasional run at the strip to showup my Brother-in-laws VW Bug . Think that setup would be decent or should I dig around for a different tranny and rear-end?
