I'd say the best M3 is the latest M3 model, which is E46 with the 3.2 liter engine. It's also the most expensive of course.
The E36 M3 is sayd to be not that good in drivability, but if you go to that option go for the Evolution version, which has more power.
Also the original E30 M3 is an excellent sports car, but it might be a little hard to get these days.

The twits who say the E36 M3 was not good as far as driveability are probably the same ones who didn't like the harsher suspension because it would slosh the Dom Perignon in their yuppie cupholders all over their Armani slacks, if you get my gist.

The 1995 M3 might be just the ticket for an amateur autocross event.

M3 - which one?

Well, of course the E46 is going to be the superiour model. What more could you ask for - superior handling, 333hp, do I need to go on? It comes down to how much you are willing to spend and how your luck is.

In my opinion, at this time the best is either a '95 or a '96 M3 for these reasons:

The 1995 had the samller (3.0L) engine, however it had a better suspension package. It was tighter, more like the street (race) car it was designed to be. The 1996 had a 3.2L engine, however you only gain 5hp and the suspension is not as sporty. Also, the computer went to OBDII (96+) instead of OBDI (-95) and the VANOS system was implemented in the 1996.

the reason I saw luck is yes, you could find a brilliant M3 waiting in some garage of some guy who took it out on weekends, but regularly drove his 7er to work through the week with only 30K miles on it. But, it is unlikely unless you wait a really long time.

I believe it depends on the depth of your pocket or your patience.

Good Luck!
