Manual hub gaskets

My warn manual hub is toast after 9 months. it seems the paper gasket between the dial and the body failed and allowed water into the hub body. the internals were completely rusted and i was unable to turn the dail to the lock position. warn is going to send me a new hub, and there customer service has been great.
just to be safe i am going to repack the bearings. the guy at warn said you should replace the paper gasket anytime the hub is submerged. my question is, can i use a silicone sealer to seal the dial to the hub body or do i need to use the paper gaskets?
thanks

Jezus, "any time the hub is submerged"? Do they come in a 12-pack?

yep, thats what the warn guy said. i really don't think thats the case since rrdstarr and chuckh have never had a problem. i think my problem has to do with the paper gasket failing and letting water in. i think the silicone sealer should solve the problem.

My hubs had the gasket on the dial. There is an O-ring to seal the body.

Of course the packets that the new gaskets come in are NOT cheap!!! they are like $25 a piece and that includes gaskets for both side and new screws for the dial houseing to go into the hub body. half of that $25 was for special order shipping because NO ONE carried the damn things in stock. Anyhow, even for $12 a pop, dunking them once in water and them being toast is not an acceptable design, IMO. Perhaps if they were $.50 each or something I could see that.

Perhaps someone should see if they can trace one onto gasket paper and make their own.

i bought one of those service kits too. half the stuff in the kit isn't even for our hubs. i think i am going to try the silicone method and not bother with the damn paper gaskets.

I got the packet from Synchro and am suppose to replace it. I seem to have misplaced the top of the package though that I did save and don't know the part number. I'm going to be cleaning and moving stuff to storage int he next couple weeks though so I'm sure I'll find it then. ANyway, I will order another kit and then see if I can get some gasket material to cut to match.

BTW, I don't think my hubs have been submerged yet, unless they got dunked when Rick and I went to Oregon. Seems I replaced the gaskets after that trip though (as if i would remember!) and everything looked fine.
