yeah, you can talk all day long about how a car with more power and less weight will beat a heavier car with less power...believe me, it has like 650 posts. but in the real world, there is such an incerdible amount of uncontrollable variable that can change the outcome. a couple for you to chew on: gearing, tire pressure, tire wear, engine wear, tranny wear, production variation(resulting in +- hp), engine break in, driver weight, can't think of any more off the top of my head, but you get the idea

This is my last post here on this thread to make you guys all happy.
All I have to say is to that stimpson fellow. 1. The Maxima isnt showing sufficient hp dynos, it is losing a lot of power with the 6 speed tranny. 2. Altima dynos are showing same, if not better dyno #'s 3. Altimas are still running better track times. 4. Your method of dividing isnt accounting for gearing 5. A lot more factors then this dvided by that has some relevance, but it doesnt mean anything, because a car with 500hp on a 3000lb car could be going through the worst designed transmission. 6. So there are more factors, but I am sure if I cared to teach you something....well I dont so I am unsubscibing to this thread because its useless |

Every blah-dee-blah argument you guys are putting up is shut down by one little thing I said (earlier on in the thread).
"All things being equal" - remember that part? And yes I did mention gearing and the driver and such variables. The problem I have is with all the claims of one year or another or one model or another being faster than another - its really all a bunch of yadda-yadda nonsense. Fact is horsie to weight ratio is the single best factor in determining which car is capable of going faster. Now go back and read that part again "which car is CAPABLE of going faster." Yeah yeah whatever there are a million other factors - but those factors are MINOR factors whereas horsie to weight ratio is a MAJOR factor - no wait I'm wrong it is THE MAJOR FACTOR. All things being equal horsie/weight tells the story. |

it doesn't matter about hp/lb though, cause we're talking about street racing in the real world, not controlled conditions in a frickin vacuum

All I can tell you though is that if you do line up to race a 2k/2k1 whether you're stick and its' auto, just don't spin or take the car for granted or you'll be reading MAXIMA from a supposedly slower car. Don't overestimate your car or underestimate the 00/01 there isn't that great enough of a comfort zone for you to sleep in a race.

What you need on the street for a slower vehicle to beat a faster one is:
1) A MUCH better driver 2) SUBSTANTIALLY better gearing On the other hand if the gearing is close and the driver skill are close then you can damn skippy count on the better hp/weight ratio vehicle winning. A manual is substantially better geared than an auto - there should be no argument there. A 5 speed vs 6 speed there is some difference but that differene is not substantial. Auto vs auto again no substantial gearing difference (not in the class of cars we are discussing). So then that being said the driver is the chief "other" component and gearing is by far coming in third in importance. So, if the drivers are equally skilled I will put my money on the better hp/weight ratio. Anyone can mouth off on their own skill and how that means, but just like a bookie - If I thought the drivers were equally skilled, and the gearing wasn't substantially different - I would BET on the car with the better hp/weight ratio. I would bet on it in a friggin vacuum or on the street. I'm positive you could blow the doors off my mom or my sister even if you had some shitbox civic and either of them had a 405 vette. "Street" racing you are going up against a wide array of driving skills - might be some little high school girls that think they have a wild ride, might be some wanna-be lead foot business man - so NO SHIET street racing is different. BUT, BUT, BUT - try this... clone yourself. Ok got my clone - he is exactly as good a driver as me. Now we go out in the yard and we have a choice between two vechicles - any two vechicles. If I win the coin toss and get first choice I will take the one with a better hp/weight ratio and proceed to blow my clones doors off (yeah yeah friggin yeah taking gearing into account too). get it? |
