can I just do coilovers or springs? which one?

I have a '96 hatch with 215/40 17". I want to close the gap a little with 1.5", 2" at most, drop. What is the best way to do this without spending a lot of money. I found a set of Matrix coilovers by GR Motorsports 0-3" drop for $150. These any good? Should I just get new springs, or would coilovers be an ok choice? I really don't want to have to get new shocks, or anything else, would I have to though? What should I do?

getting just coilovers is fine.. you might get a little more bounce of it it with stock shocks.. but you'll be fine..

i have coils and i love them. i won't lie, my ride is a little more bouncier, but it really doesn't bother me like i thought it would. i chose coils over springs because i'm always changing my mind about things. I didn't wanna lower my car at a certain height and be stuck there. I'm having trouble with my camber though. I'm curious what's the lowest you can go on coil's with 17" rims without needing a camber kit? i'm guessing 2"

cheap coilovers bad

The only problem i think you'll run into if you get the matrix coil overs is the threads on the sleeves tend to give up. Boom. That's a big risk to take just to save a few bucks. The Arospeeds are the same way. Do your car a favor and spend some more time researching exactly how low you want it and just buy some springs. It's true you won't have the adjustability but after one afternoon in the driveway trying to get all four corners the exact same height, you'll wish you just bought the springs.

Springs are a far better ride. If you really wanna go with coilovers though, DONT BUY ANY CHEAP ONES!!! They will give out on you and with stock struts....the ride is gonna kill you and your tires. Neuspeed, skunk2 or H&R is the way to go for springs...give you a smooth ride even with stock struts.

Since you seem to know the height you want you should get springs. You should get the eibach proline kit. I know a lot of people who have it and it is the best you can get. It gives a 1.5" drop so you shouldn't need a camber kit. By the way that is about the limit, any more than that you will need a lot more money so you can buy the camber kit. The springs are around 230 but you might find a deal on ebay. I would recomend getting new shocks because they aren't as expensive as you may think and they won't go out liek your stocks. For shocks I would recomend the KYB. Anywayz, if you want to do it totally right you might be looking at around $400. This is probably the road i am gonna go down though, it'll look nice.

Yeah if you get the cheap coil overs like the ones on ebay for 80 bucks and keep your stock shocks, the ride will be too harsh. And your stock shocks will give out very soon. So better change your shocks too. But do some research becasue ive heard of stories how some springs or coil overs dont work as well with some shocks as with others...... something like that...... i mean there are known good combinations so you should find out what kind there is.
