1984 Caprice Classic

What’s up everyone. I just registered here. How’s everybody doing? So I have a 1984 Caprice Classic 4 door sedan with a 305 engine. I am going to completely restore and customize it. Ultimately, I will put a 350 in it, new transmission, true dual exhaust with glass pack Cherry Bombs. I’m also going to get the body work done and get it painted. All of the interior is going to get reupholstered too. Basically everything will end up brand new down to the last bolt and nut. I have no interest in the resale value. I’m never getting rid of this car. It’s my ride!!

To start things off here, I have a small but important question for everyone. My Caprice has automatic transmission. So the gear shift stick that comes out of the steering column. The little black knob that goes on the end of the shift stick, is missing. So first, does anyone know what the ORIGINAL knob looks like? Not aftermarket. And 2nd, how exactly does the original go on? Threaded? Pop on? Once it’s on is that it? Is it impossible to get back off?

I’m asking because I have an aftermarket knob that was not made for my Caprice. But I AM going to have it put on. Even if that means customizing something or modifying something. I’m not one of those “everything has to be original parts” guys. F*** that! If something improves my ride in a way I like? I’m doing it. For example, I’m removing the original instrument cluster and having an aftermarket digital instrument cluster installed. Same with the hvac clinate control.

If anybody can help me out here? I assure you, I will be posting here regularly and I will return the favor anytime I can.

Welcome to AF. Is the end of the shift lever splined, or threaded,? Found one at parts geek online.

It looks like it’s both. It has what appear to be clock-like gears (splined) that wrap around it….but then what appears to be very fine threads at the base, where the knob would end, if it were pushed on all the way correctly. The steering column shift stick is the original one that came on the Caprice.

I called parts geek. That is not the correct knob. I know they advertise it as being so. But I already had purchased that exact same knob from AutoZone. It doesn’t fit. I even asked the guy on the phone with their customer service, why they are advertising that knob when it doesn’t fit. He had no logical answer. He said it “might just be for a different model of the same year”. smh.

Wow, been a long time since I've made a post here. But all that aside, right now the only thing you're going to get new is a Dorman product. It's splined on to the shifter handle/shaft. This part fits from 1980 into the 1990s and is also the same part that I had on my old 1988 9C1.

Dorman part # 76937 and you can get it at Autozone, price is $15.49.

While I appreciate the fact that you’re trying to help… you’re wrong. I bought the stock knob on eBay. It arrived a couple days ago. I installed it on my Caprice.

Actually I am not wrong ... but it's your car. Enjoy it.
