Varmint damage repair to coil wires

2017 CX-5, 2.5 L - Drove fine Saturday. Sunday morning, misfire. Popped the hood & the engine cover and saw where "Mickey" had dined on the wire loom and a couple of ign. coil wires. Chewed thru both ends of one (blue) coil wire on cyl #2 and only the insulation on another wire (white) on ign coil #3. Temporarily taped up the wire on #3. Spliced in a wire on #2.
Engine ran fine after that. My question is what is the best way to 'permanently' fix these wires? I know soldering is frowned on by some. What about the heat shrink butt connectors? Also, my curiousity needs to be sated.

What are the functions of the 4 wires of the ign coils? (blue & white; also green & black, I think). Thanks for your replies.
Also, I didn't run the engine very long when it had the misfire but I noticed I didn't get a "Check Engine" light. Is there a magic number of misfires before it sets an MIL?
