2016 ford explor new abiant tempture sensor reads -40

had my machanic put in a new sensor, the old one would not work after cleaning it, the sensor I bought at the dealers, like the title says it reads -40.

tried to reset it from what we found on youtube did not work after many tries, I drove around a little bit and the temp got as high as 54, it is 68 outside,

any suggestions on what to do next, does not make sense to neither of us, thanks for any help, Rick

What was the behavior of the old one? Did you compare the part number on the old part with the part number on the new part?
