Re: What up A.F? (Old School Members)

Somebody I know posted on Facebook asking where we cut our teeth on the internet. Well I remembered this place and just had to come back and log in.

It's amazing how many places people mentioned, that were titans nearly twenty years ago, aren't even shadows of their former selves. Newgrounds, Ebaums World, FunnyJunk, Rotten, and others are gone or inactive.

Hope you all are staying safe.

Re: What up A.F? (Old School Members)

I just recently made a post to try and get some of the OGs back here, at least in the 4G Civic forums.

At a much slower pace though.

The influence of social networks is being felt. Some times I wait weeks for responses to my posts, as opposed to hours or up to one day, a decade ago when I first joined

Yeah, we used to have fairly lively conversations, even in the individual car sections, with people getting their questions answered pretty rapidly. But FB and other sites have definitely made most forums ghost towns.

The (automotive) IQ, at least, on Facebook, Twitter, or NextDoor, is much lower I feel.

There, it's more about "hey cool, you got a new car, let's go for a ride sometime", than anything technically useful. That, and all the notices about going to ones OB-GYN, or getting their nails or hair colored.

In general, but individual marque pages can have a lot of good tech questions getting answers almost immediately. The big issue is searching and archiving SUCKS on FB, so if you need a question answered, you have a hard time just searching for a previous conversation with the answers or a detailed how-to. So you have to ask again and then you get trolls who say "search for it!" It's just better to ask someone who's done wheat you're attempting, even if they've already told someone else in the past.

I've found, however, that the best way to get a correct answer on FB is to post a completely incorrect answer, and you will be corrected by a few dozen people with the proper answer! lol!

1. "individual marque pages" You mean like a Facebook group dedicated to a certain make or model of car?

2. False positives. I'd rather come here to AF and wait forever(due to lack of traffic here, not of knowledge by the way) to get a correct response. Not to mention, "search" on Facebook, for what it's worth, is at best a joke. So typing in IE: "BMW M group" might return you every BMW M facebook group except the one you posted in a couple days ago, LOL.

I have brought it up before, but, have Igor or any of his top staff considered updating this forum engine? This interface does remind me of forum interfaces from around turn of Millennium, y' know?

Aspiring members may stumble across A.F., be put off by the old interface, and miss out completely on the demonstrated automotive knowledge base we do have here.
