It depends!
I tend to buy "up" for: - Parts for a vehicle I intend to keep a long time - Safety-related parts (i.e., brakes) - Part manufacturers who have a good reputation - Parts where my labor factor is high (i.e., I don't want to have to do it again) I tend to buy "down" for: - Parts for "nice to have" features that aren't necessary and that I don't care about very much - Vehicles that I don't intend to keep in my driveway for a long time - Quick-and-dirty fixes where quality or safety aren't big concerns
