Reliable city car for occasional trips

Hi there,
I need to buy a car for three-person family, primary for driving in a city, or 1-2 per month occasional trips (500-1000 km). I am thinking about Škoda Rapid, Octavia, Superb, VW Golf or Mercedes C and others in similar size. I also need advice how engine will be good for that car. I am newbie in cars, but I think petrol engine will be better, but what engine size? My budget is 13.000 - 14.000 euro. I prefer newer cars, year 2011 and higher.
