2002 4 door cavalier 2.2 motor

where do i check the atf fluid level on this car, i just purchased. the only place i see is a red cap on right side on bottom of engine? is this the place? and is there supposed to be a dip stick to check?

That is just the owner's manual...tells you nothing....

Look at this picture.....it shows the location of transmission oil check plug...it is located on the left hand side(passenger side), to the right of where the axle shaft comes out of the tranny, about a couple inches above the transmission pan........it is an 11mm hex head plug..........you start the vehicle, and have it on level ground....get the transmission fluid to normal operating temp, then with foot on the brake, manually shift through all the gears and then put in park...apply ebrake, and block wheels.....leave car running.....now with an 11mm wrench/socket remove the check plug....BE CAREFUL!!!!!! The hot exhaust and a rotating serpentine belt are in the area....now remove the plug....if fluid comes out, the transmission is overfilled, let it drip out to a slow trickle(have a pan and some rags handy).......if nothing comes out, on the opposite side on top of the tranny is a plastic Fill/Vent cap....unscrew and remove it....you will need a long funnel to access the hole.....add fluid in small increments, and watch the hole each time after you add a small amount......when fluid starts to come out, stop adding and let the excess drip out to a slow trickle and then reinsert the plug......then, reinstall the plastic cap on top of the tranny....

YOU DO NOT DO THIS ON A COLD VEHICLE, OR WITH THE CAR NOT RUNNING!

If just topping off, use Dextron III.....if doing a complete transmission service/flush, use Dextron VI....
