Is my floor jack safe?

I broke the grease fitting off on a Pittsburgh Rapid Pump Heavy Duty 3 Ton floor jack from Harbor Freight. Attempting to get the rest of the fitting out, I scraped several small metal (brass?) shavings into the pivot arm. Could this cause the jack to fail when lifting a vehicle? Is it fixable? It looks like there are clips on that suggest it can be taken apart but I don't know. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I need to do my rear brakes but I don't know whether or not I should trust this floor jack to raise the vehicle safely.

The metal shavings from the broken grease zerk should be a much softer metal than both the jack body as well as the pivot shaft, so I would say the jack is still safe to use. Get your rear brakes fixed, then as time permits, take the jack apart and clean out the area well, grease up, and insert a new grease fitting.

If you still have the owner's manual there is likely an exploded view diagram in the rear that will give a pretty good indication of how it comes apart. If you don't have the manual, you can likely find the manual by going to their website for the jack or searching the Internet for the model number.

Even with a new jack always use jack stands when working under a vehicle.
