2007 Ion No Power Steering

My daughter went out to her 2007 Ion today and had a power steering message and no power steering. When I went to pick up the car to bring it home the power steering worked fine. Any thoughts?

(I am aware of the recall, but when I did a search using her VIN it showed no open recalls. I was thinking we had had it in previously for that recall.)

I had the exact same issue. Talked to my mechanic bf about it and as he checked it out, we realized that my battery was nearly dead. The power steering is electric and since the battery was no good anymore, it was not giving enough power to the power steering.
