2000 Grand Prix Steering Noise
My GP makes a noise when sitting stationary. By turning the steering wheel left and right I can hear a noise that sounds like a sliding rubber groan coming from under the hood. I put the car up in the air keeping the weight of the vehicle on the tires as the noise goes away when unloaded. The noise sounds like it's coming from the steering boot. I had a friend turn the wheel while I was listening and feeling different components. I thought the noise was coming from the strut but after comparing the feeling of the vibration as the wheel was turned, there was more of a vibration coming from the boots of the steering rack. Anyone run into this yet? Thanks in advance.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix Steering Noise
Noise is only stationary, not while driving?
Fluid level is ok, with no bubbles? With no load, there is no noise.......make sure the two bolts holding the rack are tight....usually an intermediate shaft(under the boot) makes a clicking rather than a groan..... Feel the strut mounts as the wheel is turned.... |

Re: 2000 Grand Prix Steering Noise
The noise is easier to pinpoint when stationary, also makes the noise while driving.
Fluid level is ok, with no bubbles. With no load, there is no noise, the two bolts holding the rack are tight, not making the clicking sound. Felt the strut mounts as the wheel is turned, vibration is felt throughout the strut as well but more noticable when feeling the boots. |

Re: 2000 Grand Prix Steering Noise
Thanks for the advice. I've heard of the chassis ear but haven't invested in the tool yet. Sounds like I may need to so that I can use it to dignose where noises are coming from.
