Loose clutch fork?

I have a 98 2-0 DOHC 5sp.
I went to change the clutch cable (easy peezy right?) since it was creeping on me with the pedal mashed to the floor. Came back after a long drive yesterday and it ran just great in and out of town. Went back up to the store and had to grind it into second after coming to a complete stop.
Old cable out (again easy peezy) went to put the new one in and discovered that there was an awful lot of slope(like about 3/4 of an inch) and also sideways and it seems that no amount of pulling after the cable is put in place will bring the fork back at all to insert the cable through the top of the bell housing. It just rattles back and forth. Even tried levering it back to see if maybe it would move. I'm stuck.
