Tamiya Nissan R89C

Hi everyone,

Started working on my next project. Love the Le Mans cars of the late 80's, particularly the Group C cars. This one I plan to have a fully detailed engine bay (the box art is really helping me with this one) with carbon covering pretty much everything.

The Subject;

Progress Pics so far

nice work so far mate, I will watch this one closely.
I just got my PE in the post for my R89C so i should start mine too, the decals look scary though.
I bought an extra set just in case i stuff up but now I'm now thinking i might mask and paint rather than use the huge decals.
what are you planning to do with the body?

Looking at the decals I'm fairly confident I can make them work, just lots of patience and decal softener! I don't really have any plans for the body, no photo etch for this one so mainly just trying to perfect the paint finish.

fair enough,
I might see how you go with your decals before i try mine haha.
As i said though i'm very tempted to simply mask and paint all the blue and red.

If you do consider PE, the studio27 sets are available again. i only just got mine a few weeks ago.
I personally think its worth getting just for the brakes, i hate painting brake disks haha.

Hey GTRfan , I myself have the Hasegawa version of the Nissan R89C and it only supplies the red portion of the decals. So i had to mask and paint the blue portions.... I was pretty intimidated at first, but with the aid of the supplied decals it turned out ok. And the finish of a painted surface especially on complex surfaces is usually better than a decal... You could perhaps try it on the back wing only at first?? Other than that i 'm really looking forward to your build!

Re: Tamiya Nissan R89C

So this week has been Carbon fibre week! Finished all the engine bay and floor of the chassis. Lot's of decal softener and hot air to get it to how it looks. Not perfect but I'm slowly getting better at it. This week I'll hopefully switch my attention back to the engine and keep going with the detailing like the oil lines, additional wiring etc.

Your C/F decals look good, in the correct scale too, which is just as important.
What brand are you using?

This stuff is by Crazy Modeler, otherwise I also use Scale Motorsport.

Re: Tamiya Nissan R89C

So decided to have a go at the decals for the body. GTR Fan they aren't as bad as they look though there are a couple of shortfalls. 1st is the rear wing needs to be painted on the inside of the end-plates and around the front guards there is a tiny bit that will need to be touched up. The closest I had was TS-44 which is what you use for other Calsonic cars. It's slightly lighter but otherwise pretty close. I've also got a bit further engine detailing one side sofar. Starting to look a bit like a race car!

Re: Tamiya Nissan R89C

nice work, its coming along very nicely.
decals look good as does the engine.
thanks for the info on the decals, maybe i will give them a try after all.
it does give me more confidence in them now you've found them to be ok.
That and the fact that they are Cartograph.

Re: Tamiya Nissan R89C

Ok so time for an update! Basically the engine is finished bar a couple of touch ups here and there, decals still need to be added to the tyres. All the CF decals are finished and apart from the dash which I'm still working on otherwise the cockpit is done too. Now I'll shift my focus to finishing the body and hitting the home stretch. I've noticed after taking the pics one of the inter-coolers isn't lining up properly so I'll have to fix that.

Couple of progress pics.
