J-Body Dash/Dashboard Doesn't Sit Flush After Aftermarket Stereo Install?

An important question: I got my new stereo in of my "new" 2004 Cav and the right side of the dash just won't fit quite right back on on - it's away more than it should be but the left side sits flush. Is this pretty much a Chevy manufacturing deal where they were just all hungover (as with where they put the water pump, lol) and this is something that will just never be flush outside of some cutting/modification? Seems I recall my '96 Cav had this same issue.
