99 GTP: How to check oil pressure after rebuild?

Installing engine after complete rebuild. The starter will turn it over and break in oil was added. How can I verify oil is flowing when I turn it over (with no fuel or spark) to avoid a dry start?

Apparently, the engine can be turned over while monitoring the oil pressure dummy light. I tried doing this for maybe a minute (cranking in about ten second spurts) and the dummy light never went out. I unscrewed the oil filter and it didn't appear that any oil (other than what I put in it) was getting there.

According to the FSM, there is a pressure switch that will bypass the filter if insufficient pressure. But I don't see any evidence of oil getting to the rocker arms when viewed through the oil fill opening.

I'm nervous about cranking it any more without some indication the oil pump is working. But the oil pump is integral to the block and I took the block to a (highly recommended) machine shop for the rebuild.

Apparently, just cranking the engine is insufficient for pressurizing and priming the engine with oil. After starting the engine, the low oil pressure indicator turned off in about five seconds.

You got lucky priming the engine. Most times its recommended to unscrew the oil press. Sender and put an oil press gauge in place to dry crank initially. Some even have to overfill the pan with oil to get it primed. Hope the bearings will be ok.

I did crank it for a while and the low oil pressure light never went out. Putting a pressure gauge will only indicate the pressure at that point...it won't help to prime. The guy who did the rebuild suggested how I do it...and I've found him trustworthy.
