The car seems to start accelerating on it own. Say cruise control is set you notice acceleration for no reason. Now cruise control does not work and acceleration at times still happens. It's not like you are flooring it just keeps going faster slowly. Don't know if this could be related I did replace the fuel pump recently and the crankshaft position sensor. I was looking to see if there is a re learn procedure for the crank sensor. I have replaced them in the past and don't remember having to do a relearn .Thanks for any help.

Re: 2001 Park Avenue acceleration
You're over thinking this problem. There is no relearn procedure for Crankshaft sensor, persay. It does sound like perhaps Idle might need to be reset. Did cruise control work before? There may be a short in the wiring somewhere. But I can most definatly tell you that changing the Crank Sensor or fuel pump would not cause an issue like this. Unless you messed up some wiring under the hood.

Re: 2001 Park Avenue acceleration
There is a crank variation relearn with the Tech II scan tool, when you replace a crank sensor, PCM, etc. could set a check engine light or create "false" misfires....
You either have a vac leak, a throttle plate that is not completely closing, IAC problem(or gummed up pintle and passageway), etc.... |

i wouldnt think a vacuum leak yet, but as you point out its possible. I would venture to bet on the throttle plate, IAC problem. I've just never ran into a vac leak give this symptom. general lack of speed and get up and go, yes, but not this. |

Re: 2001 Park Avenue acceleration
As I said, the reason for the crank variation relearn test, is to prevent false misfire codes....if this is not performed a P1336 can be set....
A vac leak could raise the idle enough, so that with your foot off the brake and gas pedal, the vehicle could move by itself and pick up speed.... |

Re: 2001 Park Avenue acceleration
Well I assumed from the reading that the car is in motion when it slowly accelerates.
Since, through the reading, Cruise control was operational before, and now it's not I would still look towards the wiring as culprit. Possible short somewhere. Rooting around in an engine compartment, it's easy to disconect a wire and forget about it. Well that can be said for vacuum lines too. It just doesn't sound like a vacuum leak yet. Although I think that you, TECH II, will agree, that more information would be needed to make a proper diagnosis |

Re: 2001 Park Avenue acceleration
So I thought I would disconnect the battery and let the computer clear itself out. Car runs fine but now the fuel gauge is showing empty. Hmmm I have replaced fuel pumps and had the sending unit go bad. I have to do some troubleshooting on this one. BUT no more acceleration issues.....for now anyways if I only had 40 grand for a new car Thanks for all the help

Re: 2001 Park Avenue acceleration
at this point I'de say with 99% surety that you have an electrical issue

Turns out the something with the sending unit went bad. Quality parts. At least its working now.

So then I was correct. It was an electrical issue (Bad sensor or sending unit is electrical)
