How Do We Fix Gas Gauge & Odometer That Don't Work?

My 16 year old daughter just got her driver's license and was given a car but the gas gauge & odometer don't work.
Needless to say, I don't want her running out of gas on some dark street or highway.

What would you do to troubleshoot these issues?

Thanks so much!

Re: How Do I Fix Gas Gauge & Odometer That Don't Work?

Well, you really need a scan tool......

Most likely it's a bad cluster....is the odometer mechanical or LED?

When you say the gas gage doesn't work, what do you mean? Does it stay the same(i.e., 1/4 even if you fill it up), or is it always on E?

Do you know the history of the vehicle?

Re: How Do I Fix Gas Gauge & Odometer That Don't Work?

Yeah, a scan tool is a great idea!
The odometer is mechanical.
The gas gauge just stays at the bottom, below E, without fluctuating.
The rest of the cluster works correctly.
I know the previous owner of the car so I can ask him about the history.
What do you want to know about the history?
