This sounds like what happens when the ecu comes unplugged. If the computer loses communication with the engine it sort of assumes worst case scenario and tells the fuel system to feed more fuel into the engine than necessary. The engine will run fine in this situation, but it will burn more fuel.
What you'll have to do is get the code off the computer to point you in the right direction. It's pretty easy, it just involves plugging in a code reader and finding out what's acting up, or if the ecu is just unplugged altogether. Some shops will actually plug in and check your ecu for free.
