99 GTP: Getting to evaporator core
I'm working on replacing the evaporator and heater cores. (There's a leak and I can't find one under the hood.) The shop manual says to remove the steering column and brake pedal bracket.
Is that really necessary? Right now, I've got the trim, console, radio, HVAC control, DIC all out. Next up is to get the dash out, which doesn't seem obvious. I don't always understand the shop manual directions (often because a part is referenced without a picture and I don't know what they mean).

Re: 99 GTP: Getting to evaporator core
Coolant or refrigerant leak?
Go to a GM shop...they kept manuals until 2000, I think....ask to look at the manual.... |

Re: 99 GTP: Getting to evaporator core
Refrigerant leak. Might as well do heater core while I'm in there. 198k.
Spending the money on a leak detector before I started tearing engine down may have been worth it.

Re: 99 GTP: Getting to evaporator core
The following post indicates that the steering column can be unbolted and rested on the floor. Is that accurate?
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...86&postcount=6 I'm trying to follow the 98 GM service manual procedure (assuming it is adequate for a 99) and it says to remove the steering column. I'm having trouble releasing the key cylinder (don't feel anything give when I put a small allen head into the hole) as well as removing the steering wheel. (There are no threads in the steering wheel, so how does the wheel puller grab it?)

Re: 99 GTP: Getting to evaporator core
Trying to follow the service manual makes me feel like I've fallen in a rabbit hole and gotten lost.
Don't feel like I'm getting much closer to getting the the HVAC module to replace evap and heater cores.I did get the key cylinder out...yippee. This post certainly depressed me: http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php...orator-Removal I'll keep trudging along, I reckon. But any feedback from those who have replaced an evap core would be greatly appreciated. (Remove the steering column - really?)

Re: 99 GTP: Getting to evaporator core
Have you positively identified a leak yet or you doing exploratory surgery? I rely on several leak detection methods since no one method is reliable every time, every situation. Evaporators are best checked electronically unless comp oil is oozing out the drain tube! Lay the seat all the way back and set the column on the seat after unbolting it. Why are you trying to remove the key cylinder and steering wheel? Unless you're parting this car out!

Re: 99 GTP: Getting to evaporator core
Finally got the HVAC module out. Yes, the brake pedal bracket must come out. Not too bad except for one bolt that goes in from the top, and it's under the cross-vehicle beam. It was tough to get out and a son-of-a-biscuit to get back in. Hint: Do that one first when re-installing, use an extension with universal through the crack between the beam and the dash, and get help so one can keep the socket on while the other turns the ratchet.
No, the steering column does not need to be removed, although the FSM says to. And no positive evidence of refrigerant leak. Decided to replace evap core cuz I don't want to do that again and no proof there's not a leak. The heater core, however, looked brand new, so didn't replace. Decided to replace entire A/C system (except tubing). If I had known how much work it is getting to the evap core, I would have worked harder to get a definitive diagnosis before diving in. Thanks for the feedback. Maybe someday someone will benefit from my experience.
