Re: 1/12 SuperGT Mitsubishi Evolution IX

Thanks for all the kind remarks!

Now that most of the machine work on the engine block and head was completed, I could move on to the fun billet parts. The choice of material is usually 7075 Aluminum, which machines really well and leaves a nice finish.

The first piece to be machined out of aluminum would be the belt guard portion of the timing cover. I followed a process similar to the 1/24 scale belt guard/timing cover as I did here on the 1/12 version. First I faced the piece of aluminum with a single flute carbide fly cutter. Once the piece was flat, several .0157" (0.40mm) holes which will be tapped with 0.50mm x .125mm threads to bolt the front cover to the belt guard.

A few .063" (1.58mm) holes were drilled to support the timing belt pulleys.

After drilling the holes, I proceeded to rough machine the belt guard using a 1/8" (3.175mm) flat end mill.

It's starting to look like something. There was .010" (0.25mm) of material left after the roughing operation, which will be removed with the finishing operation.

To finish the detail around the belt guard, a .065" (1.65mm) flat end mill was used, which removed the remaining .010" (0.25mm) left over.

After machining, there tends to be a very slight ridge around the edges. This ridge would prevent the cover from sitting flush. Therefore, the part was faced once again with the single flute carbide fly cutter only removing approximately .0002" (0.05mm) to make sure the piece is flat and true.

Finally, the first operation is completed.

I somehow forgot to take picture machining this part of the belt guard. This little "well" will house the water pump. A .032 (0.80mm) ball mill was used to radius the area where the water pump impeller will reside.

Same as the 1/24 version, I need to machine off the extra material on the back side of the belt guard. I machined a 3/8" (9.52mm) flat with the fly cutter, and then machined a pocket that is a mirror image of the belt guard. The pocket is .005" (0.13mm) larger than the part, but is a tight enough fit that the part will sit square.

Then the belt guard piece was glued into the fixture and the extra material was machined off with the fly cutter. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the final piece! I will try to post some of those soon.

Thanks for following!

That's a joke everyone!!!

Nice work Mike, this should be even more unbelievable then the 1/24th scale counterpart.

Thanks icon! Actually, I am planning to machine the cylinders out a little more and sleeve them with 12L14 steel, and then ream the cylinders to their true diameter. That will be later on though, I am just trying to get a full long block build so I can move on to other parts of the build!
