Disregard this clown, he is now gone.

Make sure your shifter is properly going into park.

Re: 97 jimmy key stuck

Column shifter or floor? There is switch that is activated when the shifter goes into park when this switch is activated it unlocks the key so it will go all the way back and come out. Try wiggling the shifter.

I have a 1998 with the exact same issue....console shifted.

I have had the console apart and looked at the switch.. it seems to be working. I checked it with a meter.

On my 98.... there is a small hole on the bottom side of the steering column. If you take a long small diameter screwdriver, stick it in the hole,it will unlock the switch.

I have also noticed when ity sticks.... if I move the sterring wheel all the way up.. it unlocks.

Your 97 is probably similar...

Re: 97 jimmy key stuck

I read about someone else having the this problem with a console shifter too. Are we seeing a pattern?

i was having the same problem with my '98 and pressing the button on the bottom of the steering column allowed me to turn my key all the way to get it out. but every time i go to take my key out now, i have to press the button! will it do this every time i insert the key from now on? and what is that little button really for?

Re: 97 jimmy key stuck

Same exact problem here on my '97 Blazer. Driving me nuts. This seems to be pointing to a problem with the switch. I really want to get this fixed myself without having to take it to the shop.

Re: 97 jimmy key stuck

I started my 1993 GMC 4x4, as i shifted out of park there was a clunk.
Then there was like a heavy roar as i drove, like i was in 1st gear. i pulled over and put it in park. i tried to shut engine off, but key would not turn off, i drove home, removed ground wire from battery and then popped coil wire off, key still locked in the on, can start truck but cant shut off. all shifting works fine. is there a relay, modole or something that may have blown? i did loose power windows for a few mins but they work fine now.

97 jimmy key stuck

Thank You for the Intel. This very key/ignition issue is exactly what I've been struggling with. I now have a logical starting point and a renewed hope of a possible easy fix. Well inexpensive fix is more accurate as I will be doing the fixing myself
