Voltage drops in my 2006 Sonata

I've been experiencing voltage drops when driving at night, resulting in lights dimming, radio stopping to play and fan stopping, for 2 to 3 seconds. This can happen in succession especially when I'm driving slowly. Hyundai Co. issued a TSB (08-BE-004 ) in 2011 on this. The problem seems to be with the battery harness. I've checked other forums and it seems to be very common among Sonata and Azera owners. I submitted a complaint to the U.S. government automobile safety commission last year but have yet to hear from them regarding a possible recall.
One forum participant said his mechanic corrected the problem by connecting a gauge 4 wire directly from his alternator to the battery. Wouldn't that risk damaging the electrical system from surges if no fuse is installed on that wire?
