Is there a usual problem with a horn not working?

My Lesabre horn only works once in a while. Most of the time it doesn't.
Is there usual problem when a horn doesn't work or work intermittently?

Chris.

Re: Is there a usual problem with a horn not working?

If the horn relay operates reliably, the foil contacts in the steering wheel pad are intact. If the relay does not operate, those contacts and the circuit through the steering column are suspect. That's the easiest place to split the system in half and determine the direction of the diagnosis. The horn relay is in the underhood electrical center along the cowl. While the relays in this panel can be removed and their positions exchanged, the original layout should be something like this:

Regardless of the position, the horn relay should have orange, black, and dark green wires in the socket.

Just so I understand, I can take a relay out of one of the other ones to see if it works?

Re: Is there a usual problem with a horn not working?

If the relay clicks when an assistant depresses the horn sounder, the interior wiring is probably O.K. If the relay doesn't click when the horn sounder is depressed, start looking at the interior wiring (in the column).

If you find that the relay does click but horns do not operate, you can exchange a relay with a similar one, such as a cooling fan relay.

Took the front of the stearing wheel off and found the wire with the spring, fits into a white tube. It has a notch that fits in the bottom. The white tube thing broke, so the wire can come away from bottoming out.

We put it back in and jammed it in with a piece of plastic to hold it until I can get another white thing. Not even sure what they call it or if it can get bought.

Yes, that looks like it. I have to take the steering wheel off which is a big hassle.

Maybe not. Just removing the air bag module might get you access.

Re: Is there a usual problem with a horn not working?

From what I remember, it was broken off way inside a deep hole. Maybe we could tho.
What is the part named? I can't find it anywhere.

So you have a picture of the part but you don't know what it's called?

It's called a cancel cam because it turns off your directionals when turning the wheel, and you have to take the column apart to replace it...
