transfer case motor bad

my 2003 gmc sierra z71 transfer case motor is bad and is causing a service 4wd message to keep coming up on the dic. How hard of a job to replace that motor and solve my problem. Is it possible that I can do this job myself.

Re: transfer case motor bad

Have you checked codes? Usually set 0327 encoder circuit code. The encoder sensor can be serviced. It's part of the motor assy. May be easier for you just to do the motor. Usually the front driveshaft needs to be pulled to allow room to replace the motor. The case will need to be in the "neutral" position to install the new one because the motors are shipped in the "neutral" position. You can turn the actuator shaft on the case with a pair of pliers. Not a tough job.
