WIP Revell Ferrari F430
Right.
You should all know about this one; made from the days before Revell changed their kit design methods and started making kits with sharper details on the bodies. This one was very obviously a modified 360 kit with the same disappointingly soggy looking sides and too many rounded corners that should be nice and razor sharp. First few shots are of the result of many hours adding surface primer and sanding back until those edges on the lower front bumper are back to their glory and that side swage line is crisp along the flanks. Also made a point of scribing in every panel line. And an superflous one because I love side profile shots of cars. Engine is the same story but much of it ends up hidden so I can forgive more of it here. Compared to the Tamiya one, the construction of this is frustrating as there are parts that are moulded together and form two distinct parts that isn't really as the real engine is. but once joined, the result isn't that bad at all. and once in place, you can't see the oddities that well. and with body in place, it's all still quite convincing

Re: WIP Revell Ferrari F430
Nice work mate
Any colour combos in mind yet? Will you be using standard wheels?

Re: WIP Revell Ferrari F430
no thought on the colour yet.
I kinda got the bug to correct the body before anything else and kinda got that far. Made a little start on the interior. Tub detail isn't that bad. My usual Ferrari tan/black combo using Plasti-Kote Suede Touch for a textured tan "carpet", Tamiya TS-68 Wooden Dec Tan for the leather and Halfords Satin Black for the rest. Will have to mask and paint the moulded in floor mats and paint the console between the seats. In the kit, it is an annoying thick chromed part.

Re: WIP Revell Ferrari F430
Body work.
The previous shots were of the body in a grey coat that I use a sort of filler primer. Most of this gets sanded off before a "proper" coat of while primer goes on, which is where I'm at. One of the bits that needed fixing are the vents in the front bumper. In the kit, they are way too shallow and needed to be extended further into the bumper. Here is the left hand side. ...and the right. It's a little rough here so I'll need to sand this down a little more. Another spot to correct is the front bumper (again) where the nose tucks under. Here's I cut out the piece from the headlight part and cemented it in place and puttied the join. You can see it a little clearer here in these two. (and with the rest of the original part) I'd already painted the headlight base black while I was spraying other kit parts and y'know, the car doesn't look bad in white with the black details....

Re: WIP Revell Ferrari F430
quick colour update:
I toyed with the idea of something snazzy like a nice TDF or NART type dark metallic blue, or something like that equally nice Grigio Alloy but when it came down to it, this build was part of a series and it could've only been one colour... (Tamiya Italian Red - just painted, not polished yet) ...and to make sense of it all, along with most of its brothers... all that's missing is the 360 and 458. And I suppose maybe the Stradale/Speziale models....

Re: WIP Revell Ferrari F430
hit and miss weather has meant that painting (outside) has been a bit difficult but after a few attempts, here is a dirty shot of the body post finishing.
(yes, it's a little out of focus as I set to focus on the reflection of the tube of compound...) Trim needs to be painted a matt/semi'gloss black and the few bits of detail added. Haven't quite gotten the rear hatch though; in the middle deciding whether or not to carbon decal the frame for a little "bling" or just semi-gloss or maybe gun-metal it. Which is closer to the stock finish?

Re: WIP Revell Ferrari F430
another quick snapshot of where I'm at.
made a start on detailing the body; namely the black trim and various bits of mesh for the vents/openings. Some of them are a bit of a pain now as I had altered them to begin with to make them more correct but failed to take into account that there needs to be mesh fixed to the back of them... gluing flat mesh that doesn't really want to bend onto a non-even, non-flat surface. great... anyway, mid-point. trim done, headlights done (running lights are simply bmf trimmed to fit). I went with a gun-metal frame for the rear hatch in the end. next update soon as I bury my head

Re: WIP Revell Ferrari F430
right, experimenting with some different lighting solutions for my photos so these have slightly better overall lighting but loses the clear/sharp reflections.
what do you think? body. window trim done and started to fit the clear parts. windscreen was masked using Frog Tape, my substitute for wide width Tamiya masking. As you can also see, I made a start on meshing the vents too. and with regular lighting for comparison. front openings have been meshed but I still need to paint them black as per the real car. You can just about see where I sharpened the lip that is horribly soft and rounded on the original body. rear openings aren't that great a fit but not as noticable on the model. the holes in the lower mesh were stamped out using a punch set. reflectors need to be foiled/painted.
