97-2000 5.7L Vortec New Install miss Probs
I'm working on a a goofy project involving a 5.7L Vortec with a 4L60E trans w/ 4x4 transfer-case. Crate GM factory block and heads. I am putting them on a 2000 Sonoma frame. Used the 4.3L wiring and had Howel Ind. add 2 wires and plug for fuel injectors. They sent me a reprogrammed ECU and took out the emissions. I used the manifolds and injectors off a rolled 98 Silverado. Put in a new Billet aluminum distributor. After numerous problems with it missing. Changing plugs, checking wires, leak down test and replacing the crank sensor, it runs ok but is still missing or not running on all cylinders. It's very obvious when put into gear. When in neutral, you can hear it miss intermittently at higher RPMs.
The only thing that I haven't replaced are the spiders. Does anyone know if it would act like that if its an injector problem? Or can anyone think of something that I am missing? Preveously I had a code come up that 5 and 7 were missing but after I replace a few thing mentioned above they have not come back. Only code I have is P1336 Crank Position Sys Variation Not Learned. Any Ideas?

Tough to help from here, but the phasing of the crank sensor to ign is out, this must be set to 0 by using a good scanner, this is done by moving the dist.

Re: 97-2000 5.7L Vortec New Install miss Probs
Thanks for getting back Max. Also, I know that the plate under the dist cap needs to line up at a particular edge of the plate indentation and the dist mounted (I think) cam sensor. -To rotate the distributor - Question. The Billet dist that I got had the mounting fork bracket configured more like a rectangle than rounded. It came with it already slid over the two sided flat part of the shaft not allowing to rotate the dist at all. It is totally fixed. Should I take the fork and move it to the next space up that I believe is cylindrical to tweak the distributor position on that cam sensor? If not, how is it possible to rotate the dist and bolt it down in that position? The 4.3L had a more rounded fork.
I'm going to try and see if all is 8 are firing properly today, even though I'm not getting a code. Last edited by nealneu; 03-26-2014 at 09:45 AM. Reason: add words |

Re: 97-2000 5.7L Vortec New Install miss Probs
Stopped by and talked to my local mechanic guy. I also mentioned to him that a while back I had a code that 5 and 7 were missing. So I pulled all the plugs. 2,4,6 and eight looked perfect. 1 and 7 looked wet with gas. 3 and 5 were fluffy soot. He said that the fuel regulator is bad and maybe a poppet. So, today I installed a MPFI spider and it now runs 100% better. It runs like a new engine!!!!!! I guess the CSFI Spider that I took from the 98 roll-over was junk. I'll have it checked out and the timing tweaked with a good scan tool like a Tech II when I get it on the road.
I'm impressed and will have to change out my 4.3L old spiders some day. On with putting other things together. Thanks for your help. |
