Rear brakes on my 1998 3/4 ton chevy Cheyenne
I've never replaced the brakes on this truck since I bought it at 117,000 miles , it's got 175,000 now and it's due to be done . The gvw is 8600 but it does not have full floating axles ? Is this possible ? Or has this rearend been changed out ? Everything I read it should have full floating rearend ? Is the rear brakes something I can do myself ?

I did read that this truck came with two options of rearends sounds like I've got the cheaper of the two , or less HEAVY duty of the rearends ?

Re: Rear brakes on my 1998 3/4 ton chevy Cheyenne
Only the heaviest-duty 3/4 trucks are going to get the 10 1/2" ring-gear axle, which would include full-floating hubs.
All the half-tons and the lighter 3/4 tons are going to get the 8 1/2" ("Ten-Bolt) or 9 1/2" (14-Bolt Semi-Float) rear axle. I pulled the 8 1/2" axle out of my half-ton, put a 9 1/2" axle in to replace it. Nothing wrong with the 9 1/2" unit, and that's probably what you have. The guy I bought my axle from bragged up how he had just done his first brake job. Took me two days to straighten out all the mistakes. He had stuff swapped left-to-right, he had things swapped primary-to-secondary, and it wasn't even consistent from side-to-side. If you don't have a mentor to guide you, or the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL, let someone else do this job. Brakes aren't the place to make newbie mistakes.

Thank you , yes my rearend is a 14 bolt semi float which would make it a 9 1/2 " I'm assuming , I've done rear brakes on my 55chevy truck 1/2 ton , just never have done them on a 3/4 . I wasn't sure how much different this would be on the 3/4 ton
