1994 suburban distributor problems

Hows it going guys!! just wanna say all help is much appreciated so dont hold back, im willing to try anything to get this problem fixed.
Heres the story:
I started out doing an intake manifold gasket swap, because just like you guys know those things get leaky after 100,000 miles. I after I did the gasket swap and got everything put back together I tightened up the distributor, in what i thought was the right position, but ended up crunching it into place, it locked the gears on the distributor, whoops!! ok so off to the auto store for a new distributor.

Now I'm installing the new distributor, I set the distributor key, which is inside the motor towards the first cylinder, this allows the rotor to be able to point in the right direction, and then i make sure that I'm at TDC with the first cylinder on its compression stroke, I can honestly say I'm not positive about either but seams to be right, anyway, then i set the distributor in place and make sure all the plugs are in the right firing order, pretty sure they are, not positive because it was dark but I spent about ten minutes and they all looked like correct firing order, anyway so when i first turned the motor over it backfired through the carb. Second and third times it did the same thing. Finally i adjusted the cap on the distributor and moved it closer to the number 3 cylinder and the car started and idled, no back fire, but still is running really shitty, seems to be idling at about 1000, which was higher than it did before, but also the whole car is shaking and there is a screeching noise coming from the top of the carburetor.

I went up the street to the local mechanic and he seems to think I could be 180 degrees wrong on the TDC, which seems hard to believe because i hooked up a compression tester and when it moved thats when i lined up the harmonic balancer with the timing mark and got TDC, he also thinks maybe im one tooth off with the distributor, but this seems hard to believe because i should be able to make up for that by moving the dist cap around until its perfect.

So my question is what can I do to figure out this problem...motor is definitely not timed right, but would this cause the carb o make new noises? also would this cause the whole motor to shake and run horribly?

Thanks for your help guys!!

Remove no.spark plug hold finger over hole with someone turning the starter stop when you feel pressure. Then rotate by hand until the timing mark is zero. I've missed and had to redo this test. It will back fire through the carb. if you miss.

As rhandor said is the way to TDC compression.

After you get it there with tdc .mark on timing cover lined up with rank pulley mark.
Point rotor to no one cylinder wire on cap for old type dist.
If a flat cap dist line the 8 on dist base no up with the mark V on dist base.
Ps if it starts and runs you are not 180 off.
