Porsche 993 GT2 Road version

The Tamiya Porsche GT2 is a great kit an has been build by many. However, it is the clubsport version and I really like to build the 'regular' version of the GT2. A bit less sporty... but still a full bred sports car.

First of all, the kit and the parts.




This is the reference I've used.



So what's the difference between the regular and the club sport edition?
- I'll start of removing all the 'race thingies'. The body is littered with fastners, antenna points and other race car stuff, unclear to me.
- The Spartan interior will be made a bit more luxurious. So no roll cage, but with a radio/cd player and the Porsche Turbo S sport seats and 3-point seatbelts.
- The rims will be replaced bij 3-part RS Speedline rims. (Thanks to ScaleProduction.de I will have a very good base to start from)
- I have to add a second windscreen wiper.
- Remove the towing hooks
- And there a probably tens of things that I will run into.

So... sanding the body, puttying small holes and preparing for primer.


I also dry-fitted the exhaust system before I started painting.



Some time ago, I already glued the roll cage together, but now I won't be using it. However, this presents a new challenge.


Tamiya had designed the dashboard to be glued to the roll cage So I've added two small pieces of plastic, to be able to glued the dash to the door panels.


Then everything was primed and painted gloss black, to serve as a base coat for the Alclad and Zero Paints Arctic Silver.



The other Porsche is the 964 C4 from my second topic.


After the gloss black, Alclad Aluminum was sprayed on the exhaust parts and dry fitted again.



The body parts are all paintend Arctic Silver (later I discovered I forgot to paint the door handles and mirrors )





And the parts received their first layer of clear coat, in order to place the decals.




So, next time the decals will be on, I hope the have the exhaust assembled. Until then...

I love this kit; the only one out there with correct suspension/chassis parts for a 993 Porsche.

I too like very much this kit. I have the Taisan and the Sogo-Keibi versions. But I think it has a flaw, the rear fenders need a bit of adjust imo. Your progress is outstanding.

This thread had come to a halt for a while, but not without a reason. Not so much because of problems, but I think Tamiya made a small mistake. The suspension (namely the springs) where ugly, compared to the rest of the kit. And although you probably won't see anything of the adjustment later on, I decided to take up that task.

So it took me a bit of time to search for the right tube and wire, to recreate the suspension coils. I like the selfmade one (top left) better than the original.


In the top right the front suspenion is shown (unfortunately a bit out of focus). Here you can still see that I've cut away the old spring and replaced it with a piece of styrene tubing. The new coil is already awaiting assembly.

Let's hope this will get me back on track real soon.

Work on the car has stalled a bit because I'm having trouble finding pictures of the original gt2 exhaust. The kit has the racing exhaust, where it should have been a more standard streetlegal exhaust.
I've posted the question on a Porsche forum, but perhaps one of you guys have some more information. If so, please post ik here

You are so right. Now How wil I manage to scribe that in, without respraying... I guess that's not possible. I have to think it over...

Mask and spray only that wing. Or let it go if you are happy with the body.

I'm still thinking of the filler cap. I think I will always regret not fixing this if I leave it this way... So I will probably take the risk in ending up, respraying (part of) the body.

However, there is also good news. In my search for picture of the exhaust, I wrote a letter to Porsche garage Van Den Berg in Apeldoorn. He gave me a set of excellent pictures for my scratch work. This clearly indicates that Tamiya just used the race version, in stead of really creating the correct exhaust for the road version.










So... a heap of work to be done.

I made a small start scratching the exhausts. I started off creating the muffler by gluing several 2mm thick pieces of plastic card. After curing, I sanded the muffler to the correct shape.

Afterwards, using a candle, I heated some plastic tubing and bend them into the correct shape.


A more thick profile will be used to create the catalysts.
Later on, everything will be smoothed out using a bit of putty and sanding. But there will be a lot of work, before this is all finished, because I also have to recreate the connection to the turbos as well.
