98 PA both rear doors locked!

Got 98 PA with near 300k. A few months ago the rear passenger door would sometimes not unlock with either the switch or manual latch. Gradually got worse. Then the rear door lock on the drivers side did the same thing. Now I am stuck with both rear doors locked.
The electric switch does make a clicking sound at the door, but does not move the lock enough. I cannot force the manual latch back far enough to unlock the door. Any idea of how to attack this problem and make it a 4 door car again?

Initially you're going to have to open the doors to remove the panels. I've had some luck using like a door stop wedge to wedge the window and some type of slim jim or coat hanger to get the door open. It may be some as simple as a rod adjustment if you here clicking.

Re: 98 PA both rear doors locked!

If it won't unlock manually, chances are water has invaded the latch mechanism, and rusted it up.......those electric actuators, were known for having the little football pad come out of the actuator arm......but the manual button should work, unless the rod came off the linkage.....

Like I said, if the linkage is intact, and it doesn't unlock, it's rusted......

Have run into this a few times.......it won't be easy, but the door panel will have to be removed.......then you have to get in there with something like PB Blaster, and spray the hell out of that latch........then reach in there and manually move those linkages back and forth, while pushing outward on the door.......it may take several applications of penetrant, and you must constantly move the linkages as you push outward on the door from the inside....

Re: 98 PA both rear doors locked!

Just tried the doors again, both with the switch and manually. Still locked.
Also noticed that the rear passenger side window will not come down. That was the door with the first 'sticky' lock. Indicating a cascading electrical issue.

I remember a post about a large electrical connector located somewhere around the driver's seat which could cause some grief on the operation of the rear doors. So could this really be electrical? Where do I look for that before attempting the PIA panel removal?

Re: 98 PA both rear doors locked!

I had a happy ending to this story. There was no way to go from the top down and around the window to access the latch assembly. But I was able to:
- pop the plastic cover strip on the door handle and remove those 2 screws
- pop the plastic door lever cover
- pop the window switch cover
- and pop the white/red door light assembly to expose and remove that screw
Then push up and removed the door panel all while the door was still locked! That really surpised me. I removed the inner liner and exposed the latch and lock rods. I could move both rods but the door would not unlock. I realized the spring on the lock assembly was not allowing the latch to release the striker. After further research I used a small LED light to see where the outer door handle rod connected to the latch assembly, then simply pulled up on that rod.... and the door opened.

So both doors are opened and lubed up so I once again have a 4 door car. Thanks for the input.
