Fuck those cars, they are too damn hard to work on, and Subaru's are pains-in-the-fucking-ass to work on in general (Subaru Boxer engines I mean). I found the factory service manual online months ago. You have to take off 2 plastic panels from the bottom ("splash guards"), take off the front part of the exhaust that attaches to the headers, unbolt the engine mounts, and lift the fucking engine up, etc, etc... to change the god damn spark plugs. I truly wish I was joking, but I am not. There were around 8 pages in the manual just for changing the spark plugs. Absolute nonsense. I appreciate Toyota's & Subrau's efforts, and I'd certainly love to test drive one, but for that fact alone... fuck that.

Good luck with a DIY timing belt job, with those damn Subaru boxer engines. You need special tools to line up the cams, once you take off the timing belt. The cams immediately move, as they should because of the force from the valve springs, but there are 4 of them, instead of 2 cams like a Honda. Then be prepared to count the amount of teeth on the timing belt every freaking side & corner, when replacing it, to make sure it's timed properly. Serious pain in the ass.

Are you fucking serious!?!? (of course you are)

Until this, the most ridiculous story I knew of for simple maintenance was having to carve up the engine bay of a Chrysler Sebring/200 just to jump start the battery. Ive heard the same is true of a lot of Merican cars. makes no sense at all unless the thought is that if the battery dies, you'll say fuck it and buy a fresh car.

I just finished up a book called Talent is Overrated. You should give it a read.

Meh, I had a Buick with the battery burred in the engine bay, I've had cars where you had to drop the front subframe to get to the spark plugs on the back bank of cylinders, I've had cars where I've to pull the hub and axles to get the alternator out. Its just the time... tell an old guy to change the alt on a honda and he'll cuss about the days when all you had to do was pop the hood and the alt was right there. Its just times, engines are better, more compact, thus "harder" to work on. Do I care? Not really... If your changing your spark plugs that often then something is wrong with your god damn car. This is why mechanics are now "technicians". I don't see why people bitch about it.

Yes, yes, I am. I was just spoiled by having the first cars I actually liked, be a Honda Civic, and the easiest car I've ever worked on (especially the 5th Gens). Since then, I've worked on mostly Hondas, 1st & 2nd Gen DSMs (Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, & Plymouth Laser), Mitsubishi Evolutions (8-10), Subaru Foresters & WRXs. All have their quirks and all have their points of irritation. Subarus, however, have been the biggest pain in the ass. Though, I'm absolutely sure there are far worse cars out there to work on, but I haven't worked on them or I haven't done the huge pain in the ass job that makes them so poorly designed.

I actually just watched a youtube video on this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2uFoXjj13Q). Seems like a pain in the ass to have to do that, but I've seen (on H-T specifically) plenty of Honda people intentionally do that with smaller batteries. They tuck them into the passenger side, in front of the fender, and right behind the corner of the bumper's edge. Absolutely ridiculous when it could just be put in the trunk with a battery box.

I completely understand what you're saying. However, when you're the person people take their cars to, because they're too fucking cheap to take their car to a regular shop, it's a huge pain in the ass when they are too ignorant about the time and effort it takes to get the job done. I absolutely agree that there are likely other cars that have much more difficult cars to change spark plugs on. I had a '90 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme as my first car, and I currently drive my mom's '97 Buick Century as a primary car. Both cars have their spark plugs fucking buried in the back and deep down. Maybe I'm just use to this area, where everything becomes far worse that they should be, because of the god damn salt in the winter/fall. The Syracuse area was once the salt capital of the entire East coast, when the colonies were first formed. Literally all of the East coast was supplied with salt from this area. We sure know how to use it now... on the damn road. It doesn't matter if you don't drive your car in the winter or not. If you drive it too soon in the spring, even after the street sweeper has "cleared" the streets of the salt & salted dirt, within 2 years, your car is rusted to shit. Every damn bolt is rusted, almost every bushing has a bolt rusted to it & needs to be replaced. I hate Honda air filter boxes because if this, at least the ones with bolts that hold it down, because I always break them. So having to remove so many parts just to change the spark plugs, is freaking insane. It adds at least double the time is should actually take to get the job done. A serious pain in the ass.
